ESSAY. Explain the following questions clearly and neatly. 5 points each!
Summary:
The Code of Rajah Kalantiaw was a supposed legal code in the epic history Maragtas that is said
to have been written in 1433 by Datu Kalantiaw, a Chief on the island of Negros in the Philippines. The
code is now believed by many historians to have been a hoax and that it had actually been written in
1913 by Jose E. Marco as part of his historical fiction Las Antiguas Leyendas de la Isla de Negros.
(English: The Ancient Legends of the Islands of Negros) which he attributed to a priest named Jose
Maria Favon.
1. In your personal knowledge, would you believe the legitimacy of the document
as far as the Code of Kalantiaw is concerned? Explain your answer.
There are simply no written or pictorial documents from that time in Philippine history. There
are no documents from other countries that mention the great Kalantiaw either. There is also
no evidence that Philippine culture ever spawned such a barbaric set of laws. The early Spanish
accounts tell us that Filipino custom at that time allowed even the most serious lawbreakers to
pay a fine or be placed into servitude for a time in cases of debt .
Summary:
“Sa aking mga Kabata” (English: To my fellow children) is a poem about the love one's native language
written in Tagalog. It is widely attributed to the Filipino national hero Jose Rizal, who supposedly wrote it
in 1868 at the age of eight. There is no evidence, however, to support authorship by Rizal and several
historians now believe it to be a hoax. The actual author of the poem is suspected to have been the
poets Gabriel Beato Francisco or Herminigildo Cruz.Sa aking mga kabata contains one of the most
quoted in Filipino poetry: “Ang hindi magmahal sa kanyang salita/mahigit sa hayop at malansang isda.”
1. Write your interpretations of the poem “Sa Aking mga Kabata.”.
Rizal speaks about he wants us to love our own language and it is a gift from above that was
given onto us to be grateful of. It is a blessing that like any other nationalities we were gifted of.
We are aware that rizal was motivated to write this poem during the time of Spanish
supremacy because we were under their colony. He addresses us to love our language for it is
our step towards liberty. As rizal correlated it to a bird that can freely fly up in the sky, it has a
will to fly wherever it wants to go and whatever it wants to do.but if this bird is in a howl like us,
Filipinos, who cannot stand for what we believe is right, we will never experience independence
. Otherway implies that a nation that loves a God-given language also loves freedom.
"For language is the final judge and reference upon the people in the land where it holds and
sway.
1. Where did the First Catholic Mass take place in the Philippines?
The first documented Catholic Mass in the Philippines was held on March 31, 1521, Easter
Sunday. It was conducted by Father Pedro de Valderrama of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition
along the shores of what was referred to in the journals of Antonio Pigafetta as "Mazaua".
Today, this site is widely believed by many historians and the government to be Limasawa off
the tip of Southern Leyte, However, until at least the 19th century, the prevailing belief was
that the first mass was held in Butuan. This belief is maintained by some, who assert that the
first mass was instead held at Masao, Butuan.
To end the conflict for the
issue about the first mass, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) panel
adapted the recommendation and unanimously agreed that the evidence and arguments
presented by the pro-Butuan advocates are not sufficient and convincing enough to warrant
the repeal or reversal of the ruling on the case by the National Historical Institute (the NHCP's
forerunner). It is further strengthen by the evidence that it was only after 22 years, in 1543—
when a Spanish expedition led by Ruy López de Villalobos landed in Mindanao
It is sickening that so selfless and splendid a death as Rizal's was followed by so much falsehood
and controversy. But this has been Rizal's peculiar fate, and perhaps finally his triumph. He was
so formidable opponents had to lie about him, even when he was already dead and buried.
