NATIONAL COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ARTS

I. INTRODUCTION

Tony Stark had just finished his first week at Reece Enterprises and decided to drive
upstate to a small lakefront lodge for some fishing and relaxation. Tony had worked for
the previous ten years for the O’Grady Company, but O’Grady had been through some
hard times of late and had recently shut down several of its operating groups, including
Tony’s, to cut costs. Fortunately, Tony’s experience and recommendations had made
finding another position fairly easy. As he drove the interstate, he reflected on the past
ten years and the apparent situation at Reece.

At O’Grady, things had been great. Tony had been part of the team from day one. The
job had met his personal goals and expectations perfectly, and Tony believed he had
grown greatly as a person. His work was appreciated and recognized; he had received
three promotions and many more pay increases.

Tony had also liked the company itself. The firm was decentralized, allowing its
managers considerable autonomy and freedom. The corporate Culture was easygoing.
Communication was open. It seemed that everyone knew what was going on at all
times, and if you didn’t know about something, it was easy to find out.

The people had been another plus. Tony and three other managers went to lunch often
and played golf every Saturday. They got along well both personally and professionally
and truly worked together as a team. Their boss had been very supportive, giving them
the help they needed but also staying out of the way and letting them work.

When word about the shutdown came down, Tony was devastated. He was sure that
nothing could replace O’Grady. After the final closing was announced, he spent only a
few weeks looking around before he found a comparable position at Reece Enterprises.

As Tony drove, he reflected that "comparable" probably was the wrong word. Indeed,
Reece and O’Grady were about as different as you could get. Top managers at Reece
apparently didn’t worry too much about who did a good job and who didn’t. They
seemed to promote and reward people based on how long they had been there and
how well they played the never-ending political games.

Maybe this stemmed from the organization itself, Tony pondered. Reece was a bigger
organization than O’Grady and was structured much more bureaucratically. It seemed
that no one was allowed to make any sort of decision without getting three signatures
from higher up. Those signatures, though, were hard to get. All the top managers
usually were too busy to see anyone, and interoffice memos apparently had very low
priority.

Tony also had had some problems fitting in. His peers treated him with polite
indifference. He sensed that a couple of them resented that he, an outsider, had been

brought right in at their level after they had had to work themselves up the ladder. On
Tuesday he had asked two colleagues about playing golf. They had politely declined,
saying that they did not play often. But later in the week, he had overheard them making
arrangements to play that very Saturday.

It was at that point that Tony had decided to go fishing. As he steered his car off the
interstate to get gas, he wondered if perhaps he had made a mistake in accepting the
Reece offer without finding out more about what he was getting into.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. Identify several concepts and characteristics from the field of organizational behavior
that this case illustrates.

2. What advice can you give Tony? How would this advice be supported or tempered
by behavioral concepts and processes?

3. Is it possible to find an "ideal" place to work? Explain.

III. ANSWER

1. In the given case analysis all the several concepts and characteristics from the
organizational behavior are illustrated except technology. For the psychology it affects
tony about the work stress and personality that has been mentioned in the case.
Sociology in organizational change, when tony accept the offer of Reece and its
different kind of environment from his previous job. Social Psychology that includes
behavioral and attitude change when it comes to his co-workers.

2. I will advise to tony to that before finding a make you sure that you have a
background on how they work as a team. You should also be contented on what you
have and value those people who appreciate you. Tony should also accept the new
place he worked at. We should accept all the changes that come to our life because
changes make us strong, help us grow, expand our knowledge and build a new
experience to develop what we know and those what we don’t know. The advice is
supported by behavioral concepts and processes including psychology, social
psychological, sociology, anthropology and political science.

3. For me It is possible to find an ideal place to work. Because when a person is

dedicated and passionate on working there’s no problem to what place or person you
work with. An ideal place to work can find within the person who’s working, the way you
how they interact with their co-workers, the behavior you show them and the way how
you treat them can affect your relationship. Ideal means having a positive environment
to work and a people who can help you grow. If you are finding an ideal place to work,
then you should be also an ideal person or co-workers with others and that’s the best
way to achieve your ideal place to work.

IV. CONCLUSION

Just because you are offered by someone an opportunity you will grab it
immediately. You should find some information that will help you to know about the
environment that they have. We all supposed to change for our development. Like in
Tony’s part after accepting the offer there is change to its environment and it is natural.
We should always ready and accept the challenges in our life as well as in work. It helps
us to grow as an individual and a development for achieving what we want. If you are
passionate on what you are doing you don’t care what others treat you, how they
interact with you and on what they say to you. Let them judge you, you just need to
prove to them that they’re wrong. In life we will encounter so many opportunities that is
waiting for us. But we need to know that in that opportunity you will encounter hardship
or maybe good thing. Life is like a wheel sometimes we are in the top wherein we feel
that the world is in favor with us, but sometimes we are in the bottom wherein we feel
that the world is against in us. It says that we should be flexible in different part of our
life. Tony’s story tells us that we should be contented on what we have. We need to
appreciate what the world gives to us.

V. RECOMMENDATION

First thing that Tony should do is to tell his manager what is his concern so that
his manager will think a solution for him. If they talk about the issue, there is possibility
that the problem will be solve. Tony should also talk to his workmates even though they
treated him bad. if tony shows that he is sincere with his workmates. Then his
workmates will change because of good attitude that tony is showing to them. Tony
should show a good attitude towards his workmates and do all his best for his work. He
should show that he is strong so that his workmates will not be easy to him. it will take
time to get their heart but it is possible because he has a goal and that is to make his
workmates comfortable with him and also to be friends to them.
