Napoleon Bonaparte, also known as Napoleon I, was a gifted military leader, a

talented commander with many creative campaigns and grandiose emperor who
conquered much of Europe in the early 19th century. He was born on the island of
Corsica in 1769.Although his parents were members of the minor Corsican nobility,
the family was not wealthy. He had an enormous dream to become a general when he
was young. Therefore, he joined army and served in the French army in 1789. He rose
rapidly in the Army after he saved the governing French Directory by firing on
royalist insurgents. During the French Revolution (1789-1799), he achieved many big
victories and rapidly became a general. In this time, he married Josephine and they
had a happiness wedding. After seizing political power in France in 1799, he crowned
himself emperor in 1804. Shrewd, ambitious and a skilled military strategist,
Napoleon successfully waged war against various coalitions of European nations and
expanded his empire. However, after a disastrous French invasion of Russia in 1812,
Napoleon abdicated the throne two years later and was exiled to the island of Elba.
Because of his egotistical temperament, France failed in the battle with Russia. In
1815, he briefly returned to power in his Hundred Days campaign. After a crushing
defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, he abdicated once again and was exiled to the remote
island of Saint Helena, where he died at 51.
