OVERVIEW OF THE TOPIC


“Jive Dance”
The jive is a dance style that originated in the United States from African- Americans in
the early 1930s. The name of the dance “Jive” comes from the name of a form of African-
American Vernacular slang, popularized in the 1930s by the publication of a dictionary by Cab
Calloway, the famous jazz band- leader and singer. In competition ballroom dancing, the Jive is
often grouped with the Latin – inspired ballroom dance, though its roots are based on swing
dancing and not, Latin dancing.

Directions: Using the information you got from the previous activity, try to provide answers to
the questions below.
Name the different holds and positions in ballroom, dancing presented in the activity.

Activity 3: Video Presentation


Directions: Analyze and interpret the basic steps, different figures of “Jive”, where students will
perform together with the teacher.

Basic Step:
Girl: Step R back, Step L front, step close step (R & L)
Boy: Step L back, Step R front, step close step (L & R)

a. Take four basic step in place, Arms in open ballroom position – 4 cts.
b. Do one basic step, Arms in close position – 5 cts.
c. Girl part: take one turn outward (step close step), R to R hand Boy part:

Directions: Read, analyze, interpret and execute correctly the basic step and Figures of “Jive” in
the previous activity, where students and teacher demonstrates in this part.

Activity 5: Guide Questions
Directions: Read and answer the following questions.
1. How did you execute the basic steps of Jive?
 With a partner of course, and with the holds and positions that corresponds in this
kind of social dance. I had a hard time in doing this because I’m not that good in
getting the steps right but I know that I did my best to do so.

2. Did you execute the different variation with grace and ethusiasm?
 I’m not really sure of how I look but I did follow the holds and positions
needed.
