3. It tells us that Antarctica was nearer to the equator before as compared to where it is today.

4. The Mesosaurus fossils tell us that South America, Africa, and Antarctica were once connected because
it is impossible for these reptiles to swim over the vast oceans and move from one continent to another.
5. I think North America, Europe, and North Asia were once neighbors because they made up the Laurasia.

APPLICATION
1. You would be able to see similarly structured rocks on the previously connected land masses because
the same geologic and environment forces would have acted on these land areas before.
2. Due to the movement of plate tectonics, it is possible that a continent’s location may move in 100 years.
3. If the continents will continue moving, with Philippines in Asia, the continent will merge with Australia
as it (Australia) migrates north.

SCIENCE 10: Seafloor Spreading

TRY THIS
1. Earthquake
2. A new seafloor is formed at the mid-ocean ridge.
3. By looking at the arrow, I’ve observed two tectonic plates move further away from each
other.
ACTIVITY: Seafloor Spreading
Q1. The feature of the ocean floor shown at A. is the ocean ridge formed due to the divergence of
the plates.
Q2. In B., a diversion of two plates is visible in which will cause an earthquake, and the ocean’s disturbance
may occur a Tsunami.
Q3. The old oceanic crust will undergo a subduction process in which it will go down towards the mantle.
Because of the very hot temperature, the oceanic crust will melt into the Magma, resulting a volcanic
eruption caused by the Magma’s less dense substance.
Q4. The three kinds of evidence scientists have found are 1) Molten material or magma/lava, 2) Magnetic
stripes, and 3) Drilling samples.
Q5. The process shown in C. is called “Subduction”. It occurs when the ocean trench sinks beneath the
Mantle and rises back into the Mantle.

APPLICATION
1. The Atlantic Ocean will widen by 30 kilometers within the span of a million years.
2. It is due to process of subduction.
3. Abundant evidence supports the major.
4. No, the earth is not getting any larger and wider when plates drift away from each other. As they mine,
they will possibly encounter other plates.

REINFORCEMENT & ENRICHMENT

Magma erupts along mid-ocean ridge

Magma a. cools to form new b. ocean floor .

c. seafloor spreads away from d. ridge .

1. The Atlantic Ocean is expanding due to formation of new crust at the mid-Atlantic ridge and westward
motion of the North American Plate.
2. The seafloor spreading and other tectonic activity processes are the result of mantle convection. Mantle
convection is the slow, churning motion of earth’s mantle. Convection currents carry heat from the
lower mantle and core to the lithosphere.

ANALYSIS
1. The Glossopteris fossils reflects the evidence of separation of continents like South Africa, Australia,
India, and Antarctica that were largely separated by huge and wide ocean which was earlier
connected with each other.
2. The climate of Antarctica before Glossopteris were found was Tropical, occurred when the South’s
found glossopteris grew in wet and cold climate conditions, and North’s in warm conditions.
