QUARTER 1 WEEK 1 TO WEEK2

QUIZ NO. 1
Name: Section:

FACTORING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF POLYNOMIALS

A.) Common Monomial Factor
Example 1. Determine the factors of 15x4 + 25x2 by getting their GCF.
First thing to do is get the prime factors of each term:
First Term: 15x4 = (3)(5)(x)(x)(x)(x)
Last Term: 25x2 = (5)(5)(x)(x)
GCF = (5)(x)(x) = 5x2
Next step is to divide each term by the GCF
Term #1: Term #2:
15x4 = 15 x4 25x4 = 25 x2
5x2 5 x2 5x2 5 x2
= (3) (x4 – 2) = (5) (x2 – 2)
= 3x2 = 5x0
= 5

Last step will be the complete factors of the polynomials, the first factor is the GCF
(5x2) and the second factor is the grouped quotients (3x2 + 5).

Answer: 15x4 + 25x2 = (5x2) (3x2 + 5)

Activity A. Answer the following questions.

1. Factor completely 4x2 – 8x. Answer
a. What is the GCF of 4x2 and 8x? ________________________
b. Divide 4x2 by the GCF ________________________
c. Divide 8x by the GCF ________________________
d. What are the factors of 4x2 – 8x? ________________________

2. Factor completely 9x2 + 12 = ___ (___ + ___)

B.) Difference of Two Squares

Example 1. Factor m2 - 25
Find the square root of each term
First Term:  m2 = m Last Term:  25 = 5
Write the roots in the form (a + b) (a – b).

Answer: m2 – 25 = (m + 5) (m – 5)
Example 2. Factor 4d2 - 36
Find the square root of each term
First Term:  4d2 = 2d Last Term:  36 = 6
Write the roots in the form (a + b) (a – b).

Answer: 4d2 – 36 = (2d + 6) (2d – 6)

Activity B. Answer the following questions.
3. Factor completely x2 – 16. Answer
a. What is the square root of x2? ________________________
b. What is the square root of 16? ________________________
c. What are the factors of x2 – 16? ________________________

4. What ae the factors of x2 – 100? ________________________

5. What ae the factors of 9x2 – 49? ________________________

C.) Perfect Square Trinomials

Example 1. Factor completely the trinomial w2 + 14w + 49.
Find the square root of the first and last term, check if the second term is satisfied.
First Term:  w2 = w Last Term: 49 = 7
Middle term: 2(w)(7) = 14w, it is equal to the middle term
Write the roots in the form (a + b) (a + b). Since the middle term of the perfect square
trinomial is positive.

Answer: (w + 7) (w + 7) or (w + 7)2
Example 2. Factor completely the trinomial 16b2 – 24bc + 9c2.
Find the square root of the first and last term, check if the second term is satisfied.
First Term: 16b2 = 4b Last Term:  9c2 = 3c
Middle term: 2(4b) (3c) = 24bc it is equal to the middle term

Answer: (4b – 3c) (4b – 3c) or (4b – 3c)2

Activity D. Answer the following questions.

6. Factor completely x2 + 20x + 100. Answer
a. What is the square root of x2? __________________
b. What is the square root of 100? __________________
c. Multiply 2 to the square root of x2 and square root of 100? __________________
d. Is the answer from c the same as the middle term of the trinomial? ________
e. What are the factors of x2 + 20x + 100? __________________

7. What ae the factors of x2 + 14x + 49? __________________

8. What ae the factors of x2 – 16x + 64? __________________

D.) General Trinomials (when a = 1)

Example 1. Factor out x2 + 8x + 15.

Step 1: Since the coefficient of ‘a’ is 1, our first concern is the last term, 15. Prime
factorization is not needed here, we need all pair of numbers whose product is 15.
Factors of 15: (Product)
(1) (15) (3) (5)
(-1) (-15) (-3) (-5)
Step 2: Add each factor. (Sum)
Sum of each factor of 15, include the sign:

(1) + (15) = +16 (3) + (5) = +8

(-1) + (-15) = -16 (-3) + (-5) = -8
Step 3: Use the factors in the formula (x + r) (x + s), whose sum is equal to the 2nd term of
the trinomial, +8x, (3) + (5) = +8

Answer: factor out x2 + 8x + 15 = (x + 3) (x + 5)

Example 2. Factor out x2 – 4x – 12.

Step 1: Since the coefficient of ‘a’ is 1, our first concern is the last term, -12. Prime
factorization is not needed here, we need all pair of numbers whose product is -12.
Factors of -12: (Product)
(1) (-12) (-1) (12)
(2) (-6) (-2) (6)
(3) (-4) (-3) (4)
Step 2: Add each factor. (Sum)
Sum of each factor of 15, include the sign:
(1) + (-12) = -11 (-1) + (12) = 11
(2) + (-6) = -4 (-2) + (6) = 4
(3) + (-4) = -1 (-3) + (4) = 1
Step 3: Use the factors in the formula (x + r) (x + s), whose sum is equal to the 2nd term of
the trinomial. –4x, (2) + (-6) = -4

Answer: factor out x2 – 4x – 12 = (x + 2) (x + -6) = (x + 2) (x – 6)

Activity E. Fill the missing term from the given factors of each polynomial.
9. Factor completely x2 + 10x + 16.
a. What are the factors of +16? b. Add the factors on a.
(___) (___) (___) + (___) = ____
(___) (___) (___) + (___) = ____
(___) (___) (___) + (___) = ____
b. Which pair of factors is equal to the 2nd, +10x. __________________
c. What are the factors of x2 + 10x + 16? __________________
