"The first and most important reason to oppose animal to human transplants is the risk of cross-

species disease. According to Schinder (1999), there is a risk that diseases currently only found
in pigs could cross over to humans via transplants. Once this has happened they could spread
throughout human populations. There are already examples of animal viruses entering the human
population and spreading uncontrollably. For instance, there is research to show that HIV may
have crossed from chimpanzees to humans after medical experiments were done involving both
species (Reilly, 1989). The ‘mad cow’ disease that devastated the United Kingdom has also
demonstrated the potential risks of cross-species infection. If pig viruses, or other animal viruses,
jump across to the human species, we may face life- threatening diseases that medical science is
unable to cope with."
