IV – Table

Component Symbols Description & Function

Resistor A resistor is a passive two-terminal

electrical component that implements
electrical resistance as a circuit element. In
electronic circuits, resistors are used to
reduce current flow, adjust signal levels, to
divide voltages, bias active elements, and
terminate transmission lines, among other
uses.

Switch A switch is defined as a device that is used

for making and breaking of electric current
in a circuit. It is used to turn on and turn off
daily used equipment like television,
washing machine, fan, light, etc. A switch
can be used in series and parallel circuits.
Lamp An electric lamp is a conventional light
emitting component used in different
circuits, mainly for lighting and indicating
purposes.

Battery A battery is a device that stores chemical

energy and converts it to electrical energy.

Conductor (wire) Conductor. A conductor is a material

(usually a metal such as copper) that allows
electrical current to pass easily through.
The current is made up of electrons. This is
opposed to an insulator which prevents the
flow of electricity through it.

AC Supply An AC power supply typically takes the

voltage from a wall outlet (mains supply)
and uses a transformer to step up or step
down the voltage to the desired voltage.

DC Supply A DC-DC converter is a type of DC power

supply that utilizes DC voltage as an input.
The main function of DC-DC converters is
to generate regulated output voltage for
electric and electronic applications. Unlike
AC, DC cannot be changed from one
voltage level to another (step up or step
down) using a transformer.

Transformer A transformer is an electrical device that

trades voltage for current in a circuit, while
not affecting the total electrical power.
Transformers can be used either to
increase the voltage also known as
stepping up the voltage, or they can
decrease the voltage also known as
stepping down the voltage.
Rectifier A rectifier is a device that converts an
oscillating two-directional alternating
current (AC) into a single-directional direct
current (DC). Rectifiers can take a wide
variety of physical forms, from vacuum tube
diodes and crystal radio receivers to
modern silicon-based designs.

Cell An electrical cell is an "electrical power

supply". It converts stored chemical energy
into electrical potential energy, allowing
positive charges to flow from the positive
terminal to the negative one through an
external circuit.

Switch An electric switch is a device that interrupts

the electron flow in a circuit. The function of
an electric switch is to regulate the current
between the load and source of power. The
power source is the electrons that push
through the circuits.

Wattmeter The wattmeter is an instrument for

measuring the electric active power (or the
average of the rate of flow of electrical
energy) in watts of any given circuit.
Electromagnetic wattmeter’s are used for
measurement of utility frequency and audio
frequency power; other types are required
for radio frequency measurements.

Voltmeter A voltmeter, also known as a voltage meter,

is an instrument used for measuring the
potential difference, or voltage, between
two points in an electrical or electronic
circuit.
Ammeter Ammeter, instrument for measuring either
direct or alternating electric current, in
amperes. An ammeter can measure a wide
range of current values because at high
values only a small portion of the current is
directed through the meter mechanism; a
shunt in parallel with the meter carries the
major portion.

Ground A ground is a direct electrical connection to

the earth, a connection to a particular point
in an electrical or electronic circuit, or an
indirect connection that operates as the
result of capacitance between wireless
equipment and the earth or a large mass of
conductive material.

1. Why is it important to know the different schematic symbols used in the electronic
field?

The importance to know the different schematic symbols used in the electronic
field is it makes it easier to understand how to build a particular circuit. We use
symbols for the components in circuit diagrams because it's quicker and requires
less artistic skill. Electrical symbols are required to do the electrical drawing and
without the help of electrical symbols, we won't be able to do the electrical
drawing. Electrical circuits are represented by electrical drawings. Symbols and
number combinations are used to represent electrical circuits.

2. What are the relevance of the schematic symbols with the actual function of the
component?

Basic electrical and electronic graphical symbols called Schematic Symbols are
commonly used within circuit diagrams, schematics, and computer-aided drawing
packages to identify the position of individual components and elements within a
circuit. The Symbols are very important to represent Electronic components in a
circuit diagram, electronic symbol the design of circuits and schematics is very
difficult, and also knowing the components is very must to read the circuit
diagram representation.

VI – Conclusion

In conclusion, A circuit diagram, also known as an electrical schematic diagram, is a

graphic that depicts the connections and components of an electrical circuit. It just
shows how they're connected, not how they're ordered. Every component in a circuit
diagram has its own symbol to represent it. After all, we're not all talented artists. If you
have to carefully sketch a light bulb every time you put one in a circuit, the diagram
probably won't look that good. And perhaps more importantly, it will take much more
time to draw. Using simple symbols makes drawing circuit diagrams much quicker and
easier.
