TOPIC: Activism in Philippine HipHop Music

Thesis Statement: Activism is a collective effort to liberate, transform, and empower a social change in
the society. Given music as a form of universal language brings out the freedom of protest one can think
of. Nowadays, Filipino hip hop artists such as Uprising and Stick Figgas have used this medium to protest
against various social injustices. The killings of thousands under Duterte’s controversial war on drugs
sparked the rise of hiphop music primarily focused on criticizing the administration.

Artist Groups:

1. Uprising

Uprising is an independent music (hip hop) label and management company founded by Ryan “Jus Rye”
Armamento and Anygma a.k.a. Alaric Yuson based in Manila, Philippines. Most of the guys involved in
Uprising either work or are involved with FlipTop as well.
According to Alfred Yuson, the songs from their 2013 album was very distinctive. “There is anger, there is
the constant cry against social injustice, there is the revelatory cognizance of irony and assorted ills in the
“Philippine condition.” The inherent power of some lines is downright remarkable, and may well lead to
further enrichment of Filipino versification.”

2. Stick Figgas

Stick Figgas is made up of some of the biggest names in Pinoy pop music. Originally, these were rappers
Loonie and Ron Henley who formed the group while they were high school students. The name Stick
Figgas was inspired by their then “stick figures.”
