MST 201 NAVAL ARCHITECTURE & SHIP CONSTRUCTION - TAKE HOME EXAM / HOMEWORK

1) The length, beam and mean draught of a ship are respectively 100, 15 and 6m. Its midship section
coefficient is 0.9, its block coefficient is 0.6, its vertical prismatic coefficient is 0.8. (15P)

a. Find displacement volume of the ship

b. Find the area of immersed midship section.
c. Find the water plane area.

2) The following information is taken from a ship's displacement scale:

Displacement (tonnes) 335 1022 1949 2929 3852 4841

Mean draft (m) 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.5

(a) Construct the displacement curve for this ship and from it find the draft when the displacement is
2650 tonnes. (5P)

(b) If this ship arrived in port with a mean draft of 3.5 m, discharged her cargo, loaded 200 tonnes of
bunkers and completed with a mean draft of 2 m, find how much cargo she discharged. (5P)

(c) Assuming that the ship's light draft is 1 m, find the deadweight when the ship is floating in salt
water at a mean draft of 1.75 m. (5P)

3) Machine mass of the vessel Mm=6378 ton, Outfit mass of the vessel Mo=7000 ton, Steel hull mass
of the vessel Ms=15000 ton. When the vessel has a draught of 14 meters, LWL=210m, BWL=35m and
CB=0.8. The density of the water is 1.025 ton/m3. Determine DWT of the vessel. (10P)

4) The ship is displacing 4100 tons at a draught of 4.5m. Her initial KG is 5m. One of the bilge tank
is discharged at sea. KM is 5.5m. Determine the final GM of the ship. The volumetric center of the
bilge tank is located on the center line and floatation center of the ship (Therefore, the ship does not
make heel and trim). The volume of the bilge tank is 25 m3 and center of the tank is 1m above the
keel, Density of the fluid in the tank is 1 t/m3. (20P)

5) The ship is displacing 4000 tons at a draught of 4.5m. Her initial KG is 5m. When the generator is
located on the machine room is moved vertically on the upper deck of the ship, what is the new GM?
KM is 5.5m. The weight of the generator is 10 tons, initial gravity center of it is 2.5m, new gravity
center of the generator is 8.5m. (20P)

6) A ship of 5500 tonnes displacement has KG 5 m, and she proceeds to load the following cargo:
1000 tonnes KG 6 m, 700 tonnes KG 4 m, 300 tonnes KG 5 m,

She then discharges 200 tonnes of ballast KG 0.5 m,

Find how much deck cargo (KG = 10 m) can be loaded so that the ship may sail with a positive GM
of 0.3 metres. The load KM is 6.3 m. (20P)
