Chapter 1 Section 4
Sustainability

1.4.U1 Sustainability is the use and management of resources that allows full natural replacement of
the resources exploited and full recovery of the ecosystems affected by their extraction and use

Living sustainably – individual activity

a. Make a list of 5 things you do that have a negative impact on the environment in the
table below.

b. For each thing you do, write down what the impact on the environment is and what you
could do to reduce the impact on the environment (make it more sustainable).
For example:
• I throw out all of my rubbish instead of recycling.
• The negative impact on the environment is that a lot of landfill is created. To reduce this impact
I could start to recycle.

Extension: Think about how easy or difficult it would be to make each of the 5 actions you discussed
above more sustainable. Give each a difficulty rating out of 10 and give a reason why. For example:
I would give recycling more a difficulty rating of 4/10. It is not difficult to sort out the
recycling but it would take extra time and effort.

Activity Impact Reduce impact by... Difficulty /10

Using Fossil Fuel Smoke and Smog in the Using more renewable 8/10 because of costs
Generators environment energy and efficient use and difficulty in finding
of energy renewable energy
Wasting Trash Plastic and other Reusing and recycling 4/10 on a personal level
harmful materials in the since its straightforward
environment
Throwing away clothes Waste of cloth, and Giving to those in need 2/10, quite simple
pollutes landfills or to recyclers
Smoking Smoke pollution Stopping smoking and 2/10 or 8/10 depending
educating people about on addiction
the risks more overtly
Unnecessary killing of Hurts animal Place stricter laws on 5/10 or 9/10 depending
wild animals populations shooting wild animals on government
