REFLECTION PAPER
The video and the speaker really put an emphasize about the general idea of the
construction, principle and parts of the two-stroke marine diesel engine. This reminds every
cadet or engineer to practice to comprehend and understand the mechanism of a machinery
to be more effective and operative in the field of work. I have learned that it is usual on board
to have two-stroke marine diesel engine for it is capable to propel a ship containing massive
number of cargos. With that said the said engine can burn low-grade fuel oil and hence
reduce the running cost of the ship, which is efficient and monetary reliable. It is said to be
that the two-stroke marine diesel engine utilizes heavy fuel oil that is regulated according to
the standard operating procedure before it enters the engine.
Furthermore, it is termed as two-stroke engine for the reason of it has two major
stokes that occurs. The compression stroke is wherein the air-fuel mixture enters the
chamber through the inlet port, and the piston advances upwards compressing the mixture,
which starts the next stroke the power stroke. In power stroke the heated gas exerts a high
pressure on the piston, which causes the piston to travel lower (expansion) and waste heat
to be evacuated.
What really put an emphasize for me from the video is the new terminologies that I
learned. I learned that in the two-stroke marine diesel engine there are pressure release
valves that will let the extra pressure escape to prevent the deterioration of the parts and
destruction of the engine itself; it is also noted that before the implementation of the said
pressure release valves there were several engineers who suffered from the destruction of
the engine; as the engine is exposed to oil lubricant there is a tendency that it will product
moisture or vapor that will accumulate more pressure in the engine that will eventually
result to a combustion, to prevent this to happed the device as pressure release valves are
incorporated to the engine. Moreover, I learned that in order for the two-stroke marine
diesel engine to be effective and efficient, a turbo charger is incorporated to suck the exhaust
air from the engine, this exhaust air will be filtered, compressed, and cooled to use again in
the engine. Furthermore, I learned that in order to pre-condition the engine, a timing gear is
used to develop a compressed air in the piston. It will take at least 60 seconds to have a full
revolution after which the air is compressed fuel will be execrated to start and produce
power to propel the ship.
