Science - Grade 10: Reflection of Light in A Curved Mirror
Science - Grade 10: Reflection of Light in A Curved Mirror
I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Mirrors play an important role in our lives. They differ with one another and
serve different purposes. We see different kinds of mirrors everyday. We wonder at
times why some mirrors produce images that are larger or smaller than the objects.
Vehicle side mirrors show images of the entire body of the vehicle behind you,
allowing the driver to drive safely all the way. When we go inside large offices,
stores, and hospitals there are big mirrors inside to let people see around the corner.
ATMs have convex mirrors installed for our safety so that we can see if anyone is
behind us.
In this Learner Packet, you will get to know and learn the reflection of light in a
curve mirror

Important Points in a Curved Mirror
Center of Curvature (C)- the center of the sphere of which the mirror is part.
Vertex (A)- the center of the mirror
-the point on the mirror’s surface where the principal axis meets
the mirror
Focal point/ Focus F- the point between the center of the curvature and
vertex and its distance from the mirror is known as the focal length (f).
Principal Axis- line passing through the center of the sphere.
Radius of Curvature- the distance from the vertex to the center of curvature.
Focal length – the distance from the mirror to the focal point.

It is a curved mirror in which the reflective surface bulges towards the light
source.
It is called Diverging Mirror because the parallel incident rays diverge after
reflection.
When extending the reflected rays behind the mirror, the rays converge at the
focus
behind the mirror.
Convex mirrors have wider fields of view than other reflective surfaces, such
as plane mirrors or concave mirrors. They are commonly used in automobile
side mirrors.
As the object gets closer to the mirror, the image gets larger until reaching
approximately the size of the object, when it touches the mirror.
As the object moves away, the image diminishes in size and gets gradually
closer to the focus, until it is reduced to a point in the focus
The image formed by the convex mirror is virtual, erect, diminished and is
formed closer to the mirror than the actual object.
The object in the image formed by the convex mirror appears much smaller
than the actual object.
Your face will look much smaller in a convex mirror.

Direction: Analyze the image in each situation and underline the words inside the
parenthesis that describe the properties of a concave mirror.
YOUR HINTS:
Concave mirrors can produce both real and virtual images.
They can be upright (if virtual) or inverted (if real).
They can be behind the mirror (if virtual) or in front of the mirror (if real).
They can also be enlarged, reduced, or the same size as object.
