SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW/WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD

By Israel Kamakawiwoʻole

Ooh, ooh, ooh

Ooh, ooh Well, I see trees of green and red roses too
Somewhere over the rainbow I'll watch them bloom for me and you
Way up high And I think to myself
And the dreams that you dream of What a wonderful world
Once in a lullaby Well, I see skies of blue and I see clouds of
Somewhere over the rainbow white
Bluebirds fly And the brightness of day
And the dreams that you dream of I like the dark
Dreams really do come true And I think to myself what a wonderful
Someday, I wish upon a star world
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the
Where trouble melts like lemon drops sky
High above the chimney top And also on the faces of people passing by
That's where you'll find me I see friends shaking hands saying
Somewhere over the rainbow How do you do?
Bluebirds fly They're really saying I, I love you
And the dreams that you dare to I hear babies cry and I watch them grow
Oh why, oh why can't I? They'll learn much more then we'll know
Someday I wish upon a star And I think to myself what a wonderful
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me world
Where trouble melts like lemon drops World
High above the chimney top
That's where you'll find me
Oh, somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
And the dreams that you dare to
Why oh, why can't I?
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh

Answer the following questions:

1. In stanza 3, the word ‘clouds’. What figurative language does it refer to? What do you
think the clouds are? (4 points)
Metaphor. I think the clouds are representing all problems that make dreams
unattainable and the person wants the clouds far behind.

2. In stanza 3, the lyricist uses a sentence: ‘Where troubles melt like lemon drops. What
figurative language does it refer to? What do you think this means? (4 points)
Simile. I think it illustrates that the singer wants the problem to go away quickly or be
solved quickly like lemon drops.
3. What can we learn from the mixed song? Why do you think so? Explain in detail? (8
points)

I think that the first song learns about if sometimes the world is unfair because there
are many problems that hinder the dream that you want to pursue but we must keep
fighting to reach our dreams , I think that the second song wants to learn about how
great the world is, so we can take care of our world and can just find a new paradise in
this world.

ending unplanned The rest is still unwritten
Staring at the blank page before you Oh, oh, oh
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are
could not find outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make
Reaching for something in the distance mistakes, but I can't live that way
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
(*Chorus) Let the sun illuminate the words that you
Feel the rain on your skin could not find
No one else can feel it for you Reaching for something in the distance
Only you can let it in So close you can almost taste it
No one else, no one else Release your inhibitions
Can speak the words on your lips
