LIVED EXPERIENCE OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT OF

SAN MANUEL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

DURING COVID 19 PANDEMIC

DURING S.Y 2021-2022

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The COVID-19 global pandemic has created entirely unprecedented situations that have

greatly affected people’s lives. With doubts remaining at present over how and when it will end,

the question remains whether things will ever go back to the way they were before the pandemic

began with many skeptics remaining doubtful (Lee et al., 2010).

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic poses significant challenges to the senior high

school students of San Manuel National High School. The COVID-19 pandemic affects the

global education system. Schools, colleges, and universities have been closed to prevent the

spread of the coronavirus. Students, teachers, and parents face challenges as a result of the

school's closure. As a result, distance learning is a viable option for sustaining the education

system. During coronavirus, students from low-income families with lower educational levels

and children with low learning motivation suffer the most. In this study, the researcher will

identify the different lived experiences of San Manuel National High School students,

particularly Senior High Students, who have experienced an unusually high level of uncertainty,
anxiety, boredom, loneliness, and instability as they adapt to the transition from face-to-face

learning to fully remote online learning, where synchronous video conferences, social media, and

asynchronous discussion forums have become their primary venues for knowledge acquisition.

Learners of all ages lost physical access to their peers after their in-person school connection

was cut off. Graduation ceremonies for seniors across the country have been canceled. And, for

far too many students across the country, a lack of internet connectivity meant that they were

unable to interact or participate to the extent that they desired. All of these situations represent

real losses for students, place a strain on their mental and emotional health, and can prevent them

from achieving success. Similarly, students face an increasingly uncertain environment in which

financial and health shocks (for example, a lack of resources to complete their studies or the fear

of becoming seriously ill), as well as the transition to online learning, may have affected their

academic performance, educational plans, current labor market participation, and future

employment expectations.

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on San

Manuel National High School, Senior High School students. The researcher will use this

information to identify the various circumstances of students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The researchers will also determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their studies and

how it affects to them.

The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze meaningful learning experiences that

Senior High School students had during the COVID-19 pandemic situation in order to

demonstrate the potential impact of the pandemic situation on learning processes and ecologies.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the effects of the “Lived experiences of Senior High School

student in San Manuel National High School during COVID-19 PANDEMIC” among Senior

High School students at San Manuel National High School.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1.) What is the respondent's profile interms of:

a.) Name;

b.) Age;

c.) Gender;

d.) Strand; and

e.) General point average

2.) What are the concern and experiences of Senior High School Student during the COVID-19

outbreak?

3.) Will Senior High School Student enrolments decline due to the coronavirus? What factor will

predict the declines in Senior High School Student enrolments due to the pandemic?

HYPOTHESIS

The importance of the study during this covid 19 pandemic as a senior high school

student was terrifying, scared for our health's and challenging in some other way. But we must
continue and finish studying for us to be able to make DREAMS come true. Pandemic closes

Doors for many but A lot of doors or opportunities will open to start and continue what we really

wanted to be. Pandemic will end someday Keep on Believing we can help to end this.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will provide insights into how to prevent various lived experiences of students

at San Manuel National High School, particularly senior high students. Our research aims to

conduct a timely assessment of the COVID-19 pandemic's effects on the mental health of Senior

High students.

SCOPE AND DELIMINATION

The general intent of this study is to know the effect of lived experience of senior high

school Students of San Manuel National High School during COVID 19 pandemic on the

academic performance of the student. The study limit is coverage on the senior high school

student at San Manuel National High School, school year 2021-2022. The study will greatly

know the importance and hindrances of COVID 19 pandemic on the student. Its main purpose is

to identify the common problems that they encounter and to propose possible solutions regarding

these problems.

This study was only conducted at the school of San Manuel National High School. The

study would be done through the utilization of questionnaires to students as survey and

reference.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Lived experiences- Refers to the idea of the lifeworld is essentially the world of lived experience. That is, it is the
everyday world in which we live and experience naturally and pre-reflectively, through our daily interactions and activities
(Van Manen, 2002). As used in the study this term refers to refers to a representation of the experiences and

choices of Senior High School students during Covid-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 Pandemic- The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has become a major

public health problem in many countries in the world, including Turkey. It has expeditiously spread

over the world, originating from Wuhan city of China in early December 2019. By March 3, 2021,

the World Health Organization (2021). As used in the study, this term refers to a new strain of

coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans. The COVID-19 is the cause of an

outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, Hubei province, China.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and in-depth

search done by the researchers. This will also present the synthesis of the art, theoretical and

conceptual framework to fully understand the research to be done.

Foreign Related Literature

As stated by Kennedy Krieger Institute (2020), as the world faces severe challenges in

the COVID-19 pandemic, education institutions' needs increase to provide and ensure the quality

of education using virtual platforms. During this time, the needs of giving importance to the

education of persons with disabilities must be the priority. However, despite the school's

creativity and flexibility, the institution is still having a hard time meeting students' individual

needs with disabilities. Fortunately, various organizations help meet the students' needs with

disabilities that help disseminate awareness of this problem.

The outbreak of COVID-19 affected all international students due to the interruption of

academic work, the disconnect with the community, the inability to travel back to their home

countries as a result of closed borders and suspended international flights which caused stress and

anxiety.(Bilecen, 2020)
Educational systems worldwide have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to

the near-total closures of schools, and colleges. Most governments around the world have

temporarily closed educational institutions in order to restrain the spread of Covid-19. This

requires all elements of education to adapt and to continue the teaching learning process. The

Indonesia Government assigns the distance learning system using online learning. This is

effective solution to activate classroom even though school have been closed to reduce the

spread of covid-19. Many platforms of digital sources have been implemented by school, one of

them is using Google Classroom. This research aims to get review of using Google Classroom

during this pandemic. This study was library research that describe the phenomenon of using

Google Classroom. The result of the research finding prove that it is effective to use this

platform. It is one way to be considered by the schools and teachers to provide students by e

learning that can be attracted for the students, while the process of teacher learning moves to

virtual classes. (Mike Okmawati,2020)

A study (Marshall et al., 2020) claims that teachers found all aspects of teaching more

challenging. Education in Jayapura, Papua also suffered because of this pandemic. It is

undeniable that interaction between teachers and students in Jayapura is still lacking. With the

implementation of distance education, teachers find it more difficult neither to interact nor using

the technology. According to Rusmiati et al. (2020), a teacher must overcome all the problems

that occur in online learning responsively so that the learning continues to achieve the targets set.

The changing environment in this study is the pandemic crisis and its aftermath for

society, education, the economy and the individual. Complexity theory also reminds us that

curriculum design and change are the products of the interaction of disciplinary, organizational

and social factors. They are a shared responsibility amongst academics and supporting staff
(Oliver & Hyun, 2011), and require a collective decision from all participant groups rather than

from a centrally managed plan. Imposing a teacher selected or technology-driven curriculum

without considering the macro socio-economic environment or resources, or full consultation

with students, may lead to disengagement in learning and worsen social inequality.

Life interruptions, learnings and hopes among Filipino college students during COVID-

19 pandemic. In order to explore how the COVID-19 pandemic and other eventualities in 2020

has influenced the lives and future perspectives of Filipino college students. I interviewed five

students and used narrative analysis to make sense of their stories. The participants reveal

various experiences of life interruptions that introduced actual and potential challenges that they

had to cope with. They also share positive learnings and hopeful prospects for the future.(Jerome

COVID-19 pandemic has closed-down educational institutions and dramatically shifts the

instruction to distance learning. However, students rooted from the marginalized families and

from rural areas have limited access to technology necessary for online learning. Modular

learning addresses this learning inequality by providing more inclusive access to education. This

study explored the lived experiences of the parents who act as learning supervisor, tutor, and

home-schooling teacher for modular learning during the health crisis. This research surveyed

parents from the Philippines and applied Inductive Content Analysis. The results showed an

agreement on the effectiveness of the implemented educational policies to contain the pandemic

including the nationwide closures of schools, delaying the reopening of classes, and

implementation of various instructional modalities. On the other hand, parents have encountered
various challenges from the new mode of learning in virtual setting; delivery of instruction;

unsatisfactory learning outcomes; financial difficulties while working for the family during

lockdown; struggle with the use and availability of technology; and personal problems on health,

stress, and learning style. This study serves as a basis for providing a comprehensive and

inclusive education policies while considering the perspective of the learners’ parents during the

pandemic and beyond. (Casper Boongaling Agaton, Lavinia Javier Cueto,Learning 10 (3), 2021)

Knowledge, attitudes, anxiety, and coping strategies of students during COVID-19

pandemic.COVID-19 is a global concern affecting Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This

pandemic led to a strong reaction among students who experiences anxiety. This cross-sectional

study aimed to examine students’ knowledge, attitudes, anxiety, and coping strategies during the

COVID-19 pandemic. Results showed that students possessed sufficient knowledge and high-

risk perceptions. Non-medical prevention measures were perceived as highly effective. Students

were satisfied with the government’s actions to mitigate problems. However, an unwillingness

with the online-blended learning approach was observed. Students utilized various ways to cope

up with mental health challenges. It is necessary to address students’ mental health during this

COVID-19 pandemic among HEIs. (Erick T Baloran ,Journal of loss and trauma 25 (8), (2020)

Covid-19 affected higher educational institutions not just in Wuhan, China where the

virus originated but all other higher educational institutions in 188 countries as of April 06, 2020.

Educational countermeasures are taken to continue educating the students despite the COVID-19

predicaments. Based on the author’s experiences, research, observations in the academe,

COVID-19 guidelines, and the need for alternative solutions, this article introduces how higher

education is affected and how it can respond to future challenges. This article recommends to

educational institutions to produce studies to proliferate and document the impact of the
pandemic to the educational system. There is also a greater need for educational institutions to

strengthen the practices in the curriculum and make it more responsive to the learning needs of

the students even beyond the conventional classrooms.(Cathy Mae Toquero,Pedagogical

Research 5 (4), 2020)

Amidst the global pandemic, everyone is allowed to be vulnerable and heightened by

burnout. But the most unheard and most vulnerable voices linger among persons with

disabilities. Persons with disabilities (PWDs) are one of the concerns in society. But, social

exclusions and biases put PWDs in a disadvantageous position. There has always been an issue

in employment, social roles, and accessibility to education. These issues are eventually turning

into self-doubt and feelings of inferiority, which are reasonable evidence suggesting that persons

with disabilities received negative attitudes from non-PWD individuals. This study’s primary

goal is to explore the lived experiences of PWD Students towards online learning during the

pandemic, specifically, describe their experiences, challenges faced, and coping mechanisms.

Employing the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the findings of the study were:

(1) PWD students experienced social exclusions primarily in the rise of online learning during

the pandemic.(2) Most of the PWD students were challenged by the limitations of assistive

technologies and internet connectivity.(3) PWD students remained resilient because of having a

healthy support system behind them.(Ann Jesamine Dianito, Jomarie Espinosa, Jimboy Duran,

Jhoselle Tus,International Journal Of Advance Research And Innovative Ideas In Education 7

Students According to Weiringo (2015), his study about students who did not complete

high school shows that the students' overall sense of belongings is low. This study explores and

identified the related factors of reasons that led to their decisions. The participants are male and

female high school students with disabilities. Furthermore, the type of impairment was another

aspect that causes a high rate of drop out of high school students with disabilities. The

participants also believe that a better school environment requires more effort from the teachers

and peers to sense belongingness. As stated by Kennedy Krieger Institute (2020), as the world

faces severe challenges in the COVID-19 pandemic education institutions' needs increase to

provide and ensure the quality of education using virtual platforms. During this time, the needs

of giving importance to the education of persons with disabilities must be the priority. However,

despite the school's creativity and flexibility, the institution is still having a hard time meeting

students' individual needs with disabilities. Fortunately, various organizations help meet the

students' needs with disabilities that help disseminate awareness of this problem.

Local Related Studies

On the studies of Jessie S. Barrot, Ian I. Llenares, and Leo S. del Rosario (2021) titled

“Students’ online learning challenges during the pandemic and how they cope with them: The

case of the Philippines”. The current study explores the challenges that students experienced in

an online learning environment and how the pandemic impacted their online learning experience.

The findings revealed that the online learning challenges of students varied in terms of type and

extent. Their greatest challenge was linked to their learning environment at home, while their

least challenge was technological literacy and competency. Based on the students’ responses,

their challenges were also found to be aggravated by the pandemic, especially in terms of quality
of learning experience, mental health, finances, interaction, and mobility. With reference to

previous studies (i.e., Adarkwah, 2021; Copeland et al., 2021; Day et al., 2021.

Overall findings indicate that the extent of challenges and strategies varied from one

student to another. Hence, they should be viewed as a consequence of interaction several many

factors. Students’ responses suggest that their online learning challenges and strategies were

mediated by the resources available to them, their interaction with their teachers and peers, and

the school’s existing policies and guidelines for online learning. In the context of the pandemic,

the imposed lockdowns and students’ socioeconomic condition aggravated the challenges that

students experience.

The studies of Jessie S. Barrot, Ian I. Llenares, and Leo S. del Rosario (2021) dealt more

with the challenges of students during Covid-19 pandemic. This study investigated students’

online learning experience in higher education within the context of the pandemic. Specifically,

we identified the extent of challenges that students experienced, how the COVID-19 pandemic

impacted their online learning experience, and the strategies that they used to confront these

challenges.

Theoretical Framework

The research employs the use of “Theory of Planned Behavior” (TPB), this theory was

proposed by Icek Ajzen (1985). The theory proposed a model in order to measure how human

actions are guided. It predicts the occurrences of a particular behavior, provided that the behavior

is intentional. The theory contains three variables that are used to predict intention to perform a

particular behavior provided the behavior is intentional. The intention stands as cursive agents of

the behaviors. The TPB is hereby used to predict factors explaining variances on intention and
behaviors of cell phone usage in the classroom. It was reported that between 25.6% and 34% of

explained variance in behavior in the previous researches was the applications of the TPB . The

present study is designed based on the principles of TPB to explore attitude, subjective norm,

and perceived behavioral control, in relation to students’ intention to go outside but they cannot

go outside . Whether or not the variables influence students behavioral intention during this

COVID-19 pandemic. Attitude toward the behavior is a person’s overall evaluation of the

behavior performed or to be performed. This behavior can be determined based on two beliefs:

1) belief about the consequences of the behavior (behavioral belief) and 2) positive or negative

judgement of the behavior (outcome evaluation) . Subjective norms are a person’s own estimate

of the social pressure to perform or not perform the target behavior. Subjective norms are a

measure of two beliefs that interact with each other; 1) beliefs about how other people, who may

be in some way important to the person, would like them to behave (normative beliefs), and the

positive or negative judgements about each belief (outcome evaluations). Perceived behavioral

control is the extent to which a person feels able to enact the behavior. It has two control beliefs:

how much a person has control over the behavior, and how confident a person feels about being

able to perform or not perform the behavior. It is determined by control beliefs about the power
of both situational and internal factors to inhibit or facilitate the performing of the behavior.

Conceptual Framework

From the reviewed literature and studies the researchers come up with the conceptual

framework which is utilized as a guide in this study.

The conceptual framework of the study presents independent variables as the profile of the

respondents with respect to their age, gender, strand/track, and general point average, and the
dependent variable is the Lived experiences of Senior High School Students During COVID-19

PANDEMIC of San Manuel National High School.

study. The description of research design, research locale, participants of the study, research

instruments, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of the gathered data are provided

in this chapter.

Research Design

The researchers used descriptive research design. Descriptive research is a quantitative

research method that attempts to collect quantifiable information for statistical analysis of the

population sample. It is a popular market research tool that allows us to collect and describe the

demographic segment’s nature.

Research Locale
This research was conducted at San Manuel National High School. The school is located

at barangay San Miguel, San Manuel Tarlac.

San Manuel National High School is managed by a Head Teacher III. Senior High School

students is composed of three strand which is TVL, HUMMS and ABM.

Participants of the Study

“Lived experiences of senior high school student of San Manuel national high school

during covid-19 pandemic” with specialization in the General Academic strand in Grade 12, the

researcher decided to take the total population of Grade 12 students as participants of study since

there's only 78 students in Grade 12 were chosen to the participants of study. It was observed by

the teachers that some of students have poor performance in reading or communicating to others

almost 30 percent of students are not that active in participating to the groups 50 percent are go

with the flow and almost 20 percent only is seriously studying. The researchers found out lots of

reasons acknowledge how to resolve the problem some has no internet connection, etc. We Want

dreams to be true but poverty ended it so we must strive and make other ways to move forward.
