DEPARTMENT OF METALLURGICAL & MATERIALS ENGINEERING

B.Tech. (Metallurgical) II Year.
MTN-201: Transport Phenomena
Mid-Term Examination

Time: 1 Hour Max Marks: 60

Note: Attempt all questions. All questions carry equal marks.

Q1. Air at pressure 5 bars in a closed tank is being vented by allowing it to discharge through a
convergent nozzle straight to the atmosphere. State whether the nozzle is choked. Verify. γ
for air = 1.40

Q2. A fluid with viscosity 0.0183 Pa.s and density 1.32X103 kg m-3 is flowing into a long
horizontal tube of radius 2.67 cm. What is the minimum pressure gradient that will initiate
the onset of turbulence in the flow? It may be taken that laminar flow exists up to the
Reynolds number 2300 before the onset of turbulent flow.

Q3. Water flows at 25 0C over a flat plate. If the velocity profile at a point x = x 1 on the plate is
given by vx = 3y – y3, what will be the rate of momentum transfer/area at the surface at that
point? X axis may be taken along the plate in the flow direction and Y vertical to it.
Properties of water at 25 0C ρ = 996 kg/m3 and η = 9.93X10-4 Pa.s.

Q4. Zinc concentrates are fluidized with air at 1200 0C. Calculate the maximum operating
velocity in order to avoid elutriation of fine particles from fluidization reactor. Particles may
be assumed spherical. Given: minimum particle diameter = 60 micron, solid density = 3.8
g/cm3, gas density = 0.0003 g/cm3, gas viscosity = 0.0004 g/cm s

Q5. What will be the equivalent diameter of annular space between two concentric circular
tubes? The outside diameter of inner tube and inside diameter of outer tube are Di and Do
respectively. Also write the corresponding expression of Reynolds number.

Q6. Consider the flow of a Newtonian incompressible fluid around a solid spherical particle.
When the flow is in Newton’s law region, 500 < Re < 2X105 (highly turbulent), the drag
coefficient is noticed to have a constant value, CD = 0.44. Show that the drag force on this
spherical particle is 0.055 πd2ρvꝏ2. d may be taken as the diameter of the spherical particle
and vꝏ the bulk velocity of the fluid.
