Introductory Message
Welcome to Science 5!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Bacolod City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the
learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to guide

the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the contextualized
resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong
learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Science 5 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning activities
specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-
face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Science 5 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if
you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging
activities for independent learning. Being an active learne, carefully read and understand the
instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to
your facilitator on the agreed schedule

Human Reproductive System and their Functions

I. Learning Competency with Code

Describe the parts of the reproductive system and their functions. (S5LT-IIa-1)

II. Background Information for Learners

Have you ever wondered how you came to be?

The reproductive system is a set of organs within an organism that work
together to produce offspring. All organisms produce their own kind through a
biological process called reproduction.

Figure 1 shows an egg cell surrounded

with many sperm cells. These are the human
sex cells needed for reproduction. Men
produce sperm cells in their testes while
women produce egg cell in their ovaries. The
egg cell and sperm cell unite in the process
called fertilization. In normal condition, the
fertilized egg or zygote will develop into a
fetus and after nine months it comes out as
Figure 1: The Human baby.

The illustrations below show the different parts of the male and female
reproductive system.

Purpose of the Reproductive System
The purpose of the organs of the male reproductive system is to perform the following
functions:

 To produce, maintain, and transport sperm (the male reproductive cells) and
protective fluid (semen)
 To produce and secrete male sex hormones responsible for maintaining the male
reproductive system

The purpose of the organs of the female reproductive system is to perform the
following functions:
1. To produce egg cell;
2. To receive the sperm cell;
3. To provide an environment for the fertilization of the egg cell and the sperm cell;
and
4. To provide an environment for the growth and development of the fetus.
