MUSIC 7 IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF MUSICAL
LESSON 3: INSTRUMENTS IN LOWLANDS LUZON

EXPECTATIONS
You will identify the musical instruments and other sound sources from the
lowlands of Luzon. Specifically, this module will help you to:
 Identify the musical instruments of the Lowland Luzon
 Classify the instruments according to sound production.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Instrumental Music in Lowland Luzon

1. Brass Band
 an instrumental music that mostly can be
found in fiestas that are celebrated in various
provinces of the Philippines to honor different
patron saints
 This consist of instruments that belongs to
different classification such as brass, woodwind
and percussion instruments.
 During the Spanish period, Filipinos took
opportunity
 to hone their musical talents to avoid recruitment
into labor camps
 Marching bands, called bandas, were very
popular during the American regime

2. Rondalla
 derived from the Spanish word ronda which means
“serenade”. It is an ensemble of stringed instruments
that are played with a plectrum or pick
 originated in Spain but became most popular in
Philippine folk music
 Initially use as accompaniment to folk dances and
traditional Filipino songs but evolved its versatility
and capable to play any genres or music
3. Bamboo Organ
 The national treasure bamboo organ was built
completely in 1824 under the supervision of Father
Diego Cera who was from a family of organ-builders
 It was designed with pipes made of 902
bamboo and the remaining pipes are made of 109
metal. It is housed at St. Joseph Parish Church in Las
Piñas City

4. Musikong Bumbong
 Is an original Filipino marching band that uses bamboo
instruments and has a similar physical structure of brass
band instruments but different sound production
 The pitches and melodies come from the voice of the
instrument player
 Many of this bands can be found in Malabon and was
said to be the origin

5. Himig Kawayan
 Popularly known as “singing bamboos” of the Philippines
 An ensemble of percussion and woodwind instruments
that plays music using non-traditional bamboo
instruments
 Most of the instruments are originally from Indonesia
and was localized, adopted and developed for Filipino
music culture

Brass band

Saxophone  was intended for both military bands and orchestras


 Was known instruments in Jazz music

French Horn  Commonly known as horn


 circular shape, with a large bell at its end
 Quality of the sound may be controlled through the adjustment of lip
tension
Cymbals  Consist of 2 thin cylindrical metal
 Normally sound majestic and used in climax of the music
 Used in orchestra, jazz, bands, and marching groups
Rondalla

Banduria  It has 14 strings that are made up of steel


 Has shorter neck and fret board
 Has higher pitch than the other Rondalla instruments
 Uses pick or plectrum to play the instruments
 usually plays the melody in Rondalla

Laud  Similar to Banduria has 14 strings


 Longer neck and fret board
 Lower pitch than the Banduria
 Has an f hole as a sound hole

Bajo de Unas  Also known as Double Bass


 Largest instruments in Rondalla
 Uses the hand of the musician to pluck the strings and
create a sound
 Has the lowest pitch in rondalla instruments

Himig Kawayan

Angklung  Originally instruments invented in Indonesia


 Being shaken to produce sound
 A set of angklung has different pitches

Talunggating  Bamboo marimba


 Usually plays the melody in Himig Kawayan
 Struck by mallets made from rattan and rubber at its end

Kalagong  Is an instrument that produces a hollow gong-like-sound


 played by tapping the top holes of the bamboo by any
rubber slipper like material
 It serves a bass of the Himig Kawayan

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

IFUGAO
Sculpture
The Bul-ul is a wooden sculpture that represents the rice
granary spirits. It is used in rituals that are performed to call the
ancestors to protect their rice fields from pestilence and to ask for an
abundant harvest.
It is a craved –wooden human figure with simplified forms.
These are dipped in the blood of pigs during a ritual called tunod,
which means “planting the seeding in the soil”

Amulets
The amulets of the Ifugaos are called lingling-o or dinumog. These
are made from jade, gold, copper, bronze, stone and other materials.
These are fertility symbols worn around the neck

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE
Textile
The province is also known for its burial cloth, KADANGYAN,
woven by female elders. The people of Bondoc are also skilled
weavers. They weave different textiles from blankets to clothing.

The men’s traditional attire is called WANES. The women use a short and narrow wrap-around
skirt called LUFID which extends from the navel to the knees, and has a side opening.

LUFID
The motifs of the Bontocs include geometric shapes of humans, lizards, mountains,
rains, and flowers, and other forms of plants, animals, and landforms found in their
everyday surroundings.
Married women of Bondoc and kankanay in the Northern Cordillera wear a type of belt
called ginaspalawanes. This are adorned with designs composed of continuous zigzag patterns
woven in double faced braided warps tat end as tassels.

The natives of Bontoc create their textile patterns through the ikat, a weaving method.
It is a process of tying and dyeing the threads to prepare the patterns before they are woven
into the text

ABRA
The Tingguians weave textiles for clothes and blankets. They are noted for their white textiles
with horizontal stripes found in the edges (like those in the bankudo or wrap-around skirt) or
vertical stripes in the center(like those found in the balwasi or female blouse)
