Dr.

Jose Rizal as Bayaning 3rd World

(Reflection Paper)

The film portrays the real essence of investigative journalism about the true life background of Jose
Rizal as our National Hero which shows the intriguing parts of his personality underneath the different
controversies that surrounds his Heroism. Bayaning Third World depicts the complexity of the film itself
wherein it talks about the major and minor details of Rizal showing a different viewpoint of him which Filipinos
are unaware. The movie emphasized main points starting with his standpoint to the revolution, his retraction
issue, his written works and letters, and his marital relationship with Josephine Bracken.

Principally, the films used a black and white feature which gives cinematic and historical vibes to the
film that can really caught audience’s interest. It seems so captivating with an unusual yet interesting topic
about investigating Rizal as a human and not a hero. It was literally not an ordinary film about Rizal’s heroic
life and accomplishment because it covers a lot of mysteries and questions about his bravery and heroism.

Throughout the movie, it makes me wonder what really happened to Rizal’s last few days. Regarding
with his handwritten letter of withdrawing to the Catholic Church, whether it is true or not, I came up to a
believe that Rizal had already proven so much and it is hard to judge him easily because of his intelligence and
accomplishments at the age of 35. He was a polyglot who can speak twenty-two languages. He was a
polymath with a great learning in several field of study. He even read the whole bible. There’s a lot to consider
about Rizal’s intellectual thinking. Even if it is common characteristics of him as a national hero, we can really
consider how it can affect his critical thinking and decision making in every complex situation such as his
retraction issue.

Another realization that came up to my mind is how Rizal was a normal human just like everybody.
Despite of his undeniable excellence, he was really a natural born human that has imperfections and
weaknesses. The film really did an investigation of every detail in regards with Rizal’s life by doing an interview
and giving an objective answer based on his remain stuff which is convincing and accurate. It’s also obviously
shown the Spanish colonization and its irreverent sentence for the Filipinos. It really showcased the third
world culture in the Philippines as it carries the history particularly the abusive Spanish colonial and criticism
on the Catholic Church.

In conclusion, the film has its great content that conveys a strong message for the Filipino people. It
provides wide opinions and judgment behind the unrevealed secrets and unsolved controversies that can
open different perceptions. I can say that the directors and screenwriters behind this film are excellently great
and fair from the materials, symbols and icons used for visualization to the examination of Rizal’s life by
showing his different sides. Overall, the film itself is truly worthwhile.
