c. Flora and Fauna

 The three-layered virgin forest of Subic Bay and Bataan is home to the

world's largest bats: the giant flying fox (Acerodon jubatus) and the

golden crown flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus). Over the years, these two

species of giant fruit bats have roamed the 10,000-hectare Subic

Watershed and Forest Reserve, which is among the world’s largest

roosting sites for bats.

 An ordinary giant flying fox weighs up to 2.5 pounds (1.1 kilograms) which

is heavier than the golden crown flying fox. The golden crown, however,

is the largest of all bats with wingspan measuring up to six feet.

 In Zambales, the 17,000-hectare Mt. Tapulao is home to species of murrid

rodents, the Rhyncomys tapulao and Apomys brownorum. These rodents

can only be found in Mt. Tapulao.

 Seven insectivorous bats were recorded in Mt. Tapulao, three of which

are endemic to the Philippines -- the yellow-faced horseshoe bat

(Rhinolophus virgo), large-eared horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus

philippinensis), and the orange-fingered myotis (Myotis rufopictus).

 Bataan

Bataan Day commemorates those who lost their lives defending

the peninsula of Bataan (in the Philippines) against the Japanese in 1941 -42

and those who subsequently died on the “Bataan Death March”. Also called

“Day of Valor”. Celebrated on April 9th, each year. Bataan Day or Day of Valor

(called Araw ng Kagitingan in native Filipino) is celebrated in honor of the

American and Filipino troops who defended the Bataan peninsula in the

Philippines against the Japanese during World War II. It is a day of

remembrance marked by official speeches centered on the themes of honor

and freedom. Large groups of Filipinos also re-walk parts of the route of the

infamous “Bataan Death March” that was endured by American

and Filipino soldiers following their capture by the Japanese. The

every holy week or lenten season, only in the municipality of Bulakan,

Bulacan. From the word itself, you can easily identify what does this

event signifies. It is a play that portrays on how Jesus Crist was

captured.

According to the residents, it’s been a part of their rich culture. It is

just one of their tradition which gives a huge impact to their religious

beliefs. Not all the barangays of Bulakan needs to do it, but the local

parish is the one who gives location where this event could be held.

According to my research, a group from the local parish will create a

list that contains the names of the men who are member of their

group. And then they will pick a name of who will be abducted on the

selected date (mostly moundy Thursday) at around 6PM. The other

group members will find the chosen one and will be brought to the

church, where the event will start. It will be followed by repentance

while some of the people were hitting the chosen one by a palm

leaves. The chosen one will bring the huge cross put on his shoulder

and will walk few meters going to a parish church where the play will

end.

For this year, I was able to witness how this event was held. Church of

Sta. Ana was the start of the play where earlier than 6PM, the people

were waiting for the announcement if who’s gonna be the chosen

crowd multiplied. When the chosen one was ready for his journey, the

crowd occupied even the middle of the road holding the rope

encircling the members of the play.

Baliuag Lenten Procession

Experience the longest and the grandest Lenten procession in the

Philippines. An old tradition of the people from Baliuag Bulacan every

Holy Wednesday and Good Friday. The more than 90 carroza

showcases the life and death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

 Nueva Ecija

Every town has a flamboyant fiesta celebration that exhibits

the people's humility and devotion in their patron saints. This is best

shown in Bibiclat, Aliaga where the famous Taong Putik or Nagsa San

Juan ritual is celebrated during the Feast of Saint John the Baptist

every June 24. During the celebration, the devotees cover their bodies

with mud and dried leaves.

 Pampanga

Just like the other ethnolinguistic groups, the Kapampangans

have rich customs and traditions governing the rites of passage. Some

of these practices are still being observed nowadays.

Birth Practices. In one of the barrios of Guagua, Pampanga, close

relatives of a woman who is about to deliver a child, together with

their neighbor, make noise like shouting, beating tin cans and

exploding firecrackers in order to help expel the fetus faster.

Baptismal Rites Practices. In many Kapampangan houses, the baby’s

baptismal dress serves as a souvenir and decoration for the sala. It is

put on a frame and hung in the sala like a picture.

Courtship and Marriage. The only prevalent form of courtship now is

the pamanhikan, where the male, with the permission of the parents,

between the boy and the girl, the marriage ceremony is arranged. At

present, pamanhikan is being practiced when the parents of the boy

confer with their balae (parent of the bride-to-be) regarding marriage

plans of the children.

Death and Burial. The wake (makipaglame) lasts for at least three days

and two nights after which everybody participates in the libing

(interment).

As part of the ritual, vigil is observed till the ninth day after the death

of the deceased known as pasiyam(day).

On the first death anniversary, lukas paldas (literally the removing of

the dress for mourning) is practiced with a grandiose meal. The

pangadi (prayer observance) is an important part of the ritual.

On Beliefs. Some of the beliefs which have survived to this day are the

following:

 Tarlac

Belenismo one of the prominent symbols in celebrating Christmas in

the Philippines is the Belen, the Nativity Scene. Derived from the Spanish

name for Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, the Belen has been

carrying the message of love, mercy and humility of Christ to Filipinos.

Alongside the parol (lantern), the Belen has become a permanent fixture in

homes, churches, schools and even office buildings during the Christmas

season. In fact, some establishments have become popular to shoppers,

especially residents of Metro Manila. In the 1960s up to the early 2000, the

outdoor Belen that used to be at the COD building in Araneta Center dazzled

people visiting the Araneta Center. In 2003 it was moved to the Ortigas-

controlled Greenhills Shopping Center.
