Direction. Read the paragraph carefully. Determine the Main Topic and
the Main Idea.

1. I have a dog named Pringles. I taught him a lot of tricks. When I tell him to Pringles will
sit, lie down or give me a high five. Also, he can waive his paws to greet people. When I say
“Dance, Pringles!” he will stand up on two legs and walk. I don’t know many dogs that can do such
an amazing trick.

Main Topic: The dog named Pringles.

Main Idea: It's about a dog who was trained to perform tricks.

2. By the year 2050, urban population is predicted to explode. According to Newsweek

(June 6, 2011), an estimated 6.4 billion people will be living in cities, and this despite the
complaints about high crime rate and high standard of living in the city. Why is this the trend?
This pattern of rural to urban migration has been established for decades now and for three
main reasons. First, industrialization gave birth to factories which are often built-in centers of
transportation and commerce, for easier production and marketing of goods. Second, with more
and more families moving to the cities, governments and private institutions thought it’s
practical to build schools near cities.

The opportunity for better education has proven to be a very strong magnet that further
pulled rural dwellers to cities. Finally, what sealed the trend was the establishment of places of
entertainment like theaters, sports arenas, and museums which made city life alluring.

Main Topic: The urban population growth.

Main Idea: The pattern and reasons of rural to urban migration.

3. The United States calls its basic unit if currency the “dollar”. The money in Great Britain is
called “pound”. Korea uses the “won”. In Russia you spend “rubles”. Mexico and Philippines use a
“peso”. The country of Zaire calls its currency “Zaire”.

Main Topic: Basic unit of currency

Main Idea: The different names of currency/money in multiple countries

4. Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that occurs in abusive relationships. It is an

insidious and sometimes covert type of emotional abuse where the bully or abuser makes the
target questions their judgments and reality. Ultimately, the victim of gaslighting starts to
wonder if they are losing their sanity.

Gaslighting is a technique that undermines your entire perception of reality. When

someone is gaslighting you, you often second-guess yourself, your memories, and your
perceptions. After communicating with the person gaslighting you, you are left feeling dazed
and wondering if there is something wrong with you.1 Tactics like these can confuse you and
cause you to question your judgment and overall mental health.

Main Topic: Gaslighting

Main Idea: Different fields have different definitions of gaslighting.

Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that
negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also,
treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once
enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your
ability to function at work and at home.

Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any given year. And one in six
people (16.6%) will experience depression at some time in their life. Depression can occur at any
time, but on average, first appears during the late teens to mid-20s. Women are more likely
than men to experience depression. Some studies show that one-third of women will experience
a major depressive episode in their lifetime. There is a high degree of heritability
(approximately 40%) when first-degree relatives (parents/children/siblings) have depression.
neglect, abuse or poverty may make some people more vulnerable to depression
