II ASSIGNMENT – DATA COLLECTION

INTRODUCTION:
Data collection is the process of gathering and measuring information on variables of
interest, in an established systematic fashion. It is to capture quality evidence.
Data collection is one of the most important stages in conducting a research.
It is a very demanding job which needs thorough planning, hard work, patience,
perseverance and more to be able to complete the task successfully.

PRIMARY DATA:
Data that has been collected from first-hand-experience is known as primary data.
Primary data has not been published yet and is more reliable, authentic and objective
because Primary data has not been changed or altered by human beings.
Sources of primary data:
 Experiments
 Survey
 Questionnaire
 Interview
 Observations

SECONDARY DATA:
Data collected from a source that has already been published in any form is called
as secondary data.
Sources of Secondary Data:
 Books
 Records
 Biographies
 Newspapers
 Published censuses or other statistical data
 Internet articles
 Research articles by other researchers (journals)

STAGES IN DATA COLLECTION:


There are 3 stages in Data Collection of the Project -
 Historical study -
Historical background (Period of origin), evolution & present status
 Literature study –
Definition, Classification (types), Organization of spaces, Land area requirement
 Space standards –
List out the activities & space required for each activity should be as per the
norms/standards/NBC.
1. HISTORICAL STUDY –
The Historical Study includes –
 Historical background of the project chosen,
Origin & status at that time
 Evolution &
Development stages since its origin
 Present status.
Today its status

Ex: Shopping complex –


(Weekly Sante, Small Kirana shops, Departmental Stores, Shopping Malls etc)

Ex: SPA at Aurangabad


 Historical Background:
Architecture is one of the prime & important elements of development of civilization can
be seen since ancient period.
Firstly house is the prime structure used by human; later on other buildings were
introduced to the civilization.
In the late 19th Century people of India gained education in Architecture. The first
Architecture College in India & Asia is Sir J J School of Architecture was established in 1913.
 Evolution:
As scope of Architectural education increases the demand for Architectural Institutes in
India. After Independence the major Institutes were established in India was CEPT Ahmedabad,
IIT Kharagpur & SPA Delhi.
 Present status:
At present there are more than 400 institutions, which impart architectural education in
India.
2. THE LITERATURE STUDY -
Literature study includes –
 Definition,
Meaning of the Topic chosen
 Classification or types,
Types of Project (EX: Hotel – 3-star, 5- star etc),
 Organization of Spaces &
Zoning of the Spaces as per user (Public, Semi Public or Private)
 Land area requirements.
Total area required for the Project

Ex: SPA
 Definition:
School of planning & Architecture (SPA) are a group of autonomous public Institutes for
higher education under Ministry of Human resource Development, Government of India.
 Classification or Types:
There are many private and government colleges approved by COA (Council of
Architecture) & AICTE (All Indian India Council for Technical Education). Some of the best
School of Architecture in India based on their research, teaching skills and campus placement
are -
 IITs,
 SPA
 Deemed Universities,
 Private &
 Govt. Institutes.
 Organization of Spaces:
 Public Space ……………. Guest/Parent
Parking, Entrance Hall, Administration, Exhibition halls, Toilet etc
 Semi Public Space ……Staff/Students/Guest/Parent
Administration Auditorium, Seminar Halls, Conference room, Canteen etc
 Private Space ………….. Staff/Students
Class rooms, Staff rooms, Laboratories, Library, Workshops etc
 Land Area requirement:
Total Land area required for the Project should be as per the respective
Norms/Standards/NBC.
It may be in terms of acres.
3. SPACE STANDARDS:
List out all the activities (requirements) & Calculate Space required for each activity and
it should be as per the norms/standards/NBC.
 Activity/Space – Name of the room (Ex: Conference Room)
 Size – area of the room (Ex: ____ x ____ or area)
 Types of seating – (Ex: U shape, Board room style, Theatre style etc)
 Furniture required & sizes – Individually
 Circulation & Clearance space –
