2020 End Of Year Project

BACKGROUND:
Your teacher has decided to start creating new rules and laws for
the classroom. You can’t play on the playground, no talking at all
during the school day, and you must do 30 pages of homework a
night. If you don’t follow the rules, you have detention for 3
hours a day. You are getting sick and tired of these rules and
consequences, so you and your friends decide to leave and settle a
new place.

REQUIRED EACH DAY


Primary Sources
At the end of each day’s work, you will create a journal entry or a
mini-newspaper article. You will write about what work you did, why
it’s important to your settlement, and how you’re feeling.

You are creating a primary source that can be read by people in the
future to understand how and why you created things in your
settlement.

Task #1: Settlement Setup


Suggested Time: 1-2 Day(s)
 Name your settlement
 Decide what type of settlement it will be (rural/
urban/suburban)
 Choose the state bird, state tree, and state food
 Choose the type of government (democracy or monarchy)
 Create rules, laws, and consequences for your settlement,
written in the form of a constitution
 Design a flag using 2D geometric shapes, various types of
lines, and patterns (be prepared to name the shapes, lines,
and/or patterns you used in your flag)
Criteria for Success
You are successful today if you
 Have decided on a name for your settlement
 Have decided what type of settlement it is (rural, urban, or
suburban)
 Have chosen a state bird, state tree, and state food
 Chosen the type of government
 Written a constitution for your settlement that includes
rules, laws, and consequences.
 Designed a state flag with geometric shapes and patterns
 Drawn and colored the state flag on a piece of poster board
 Can name all shapes and lines used in the flag
 You have created a journal entry about the work you completed.
Task #2: Setting up the economy and the government
Suggested Time: 1 Day
 List the businesses that you will have in your settlement.
 List the human, capital, and natural resources you will need
for each business.
 Design currency (paper money and coins) for your settlement
 Name all government agencies and officials you need to make the
citizens of the settlement happen.
 List the roles of each part of the government.
 Make a chart of the services the government will provide for
its citizens.
Criteria for Success
You are successful today if you
 Have listed all businesses that will be located in your
settlement.
 List all human resources needed for each business.
 Listed all capital resources for each business.
 Listed all natural resources required for each business.
 Create currency of various denominations.
 Named all parts of the government.
 Listed all officials that will be working for the government.
 Determine if the officials will be elected or chosen by the
leaders.
 Listed all the roles of each part of the government.
 Made a chart of what you will provide to the citizens (i.e.
schools)

Task #3: Maps and Resources


Suggested Time: 2 Days
 Draw 3 different types of maps for your settlement (examples:
political, road, resource, physical, topographical)
 Named all natural resources that are located in your
settlement, and the commodities that can be created from these
resources.
 Name the climate of your settlement
 Design a 4th map of the settlement that shows the buildings,
businesses, parks, and other features of your settlement.
 Name the area and perimeter of each building or park in your
city.
Criteria for Success
You are successful today if you
 Have drawn and labeled 3 types of maps
 Created a key for your maps
 Named the natural resources that are located in your
settlement.
 Name the commodities that can be created from these natural
resources.
 Designed a map of the settlement that shows the buildings,
businesses, parks, and other features.
 Labeled all features on the map
 Named the area and perimeter of each building, park, or other
feature in your city.

Task #4: The Restaurant


Suggested Time: 1 Day
 Name your restaurant
 Create a diagram of the food pyramid
 Design the restaurant logo and menu
 Create a balanced menu that includes members of all the food
groups and offers a variety of choices for your customers.
 Name the price of the items in your restaurant.
 Create 5 balanced meals (combo’s) that your customers could
order, including the price of the combo.
Criteria for Success
You are successful today if you
 Named your restaurant
 Create a diagram of the food pyramid
 Designed a menu and restaurant logo
 Created a balanced menu with reasonable prices.
 Created 5 balanced meals that your customers could order, and
included the price of the combos.

Task #5: The Census


Suggested Time: 1-2 Day(s)
Every 10 years, a census is conducted to find out the population of
the country and to gather information about the citizens.
 Name the population of your settlement in standard form,
expanded form, and word form.
 Create 3 questions to ask the citizens of your settlement.
 Ask each question to 24 people (each scholar in the class)
 Create graphs and charts for each question to display the
data:
 Question 1: Tally chart + bar graph
 Question 2: Tally chart + pictograph
 Question 3: Tally chart + line plot
Criteria for Success
You are successful today if you
 Named the population of your settlement in standard form,
expanded form, and word form.
 Collected data from 24 people, answering 3 different
questions.
 Created a tally chart/bar graph for question 1, tally
chart/pictograph for question 2, and tally chart/line plot for
question 3.

Task #6: History and Culture


Suggested Time: 2 Days
 List the major events and festivals that will occur in your
settlement (i.e. Mardi Gras)
 List the type of music, food, and holidays that will be
celebrated in your settlement
 Choose 1 major event in your settlement. Write a first-hand
account (primary source) describing what happened during the
event. Draw an illustration to accompany the story.
 Choose a different event in your settlement. Write an
encyclopedia entry (secondary source) about the event.
 Create a timeline of the history of your settlement.
Criteria for Success
You are successful today if you
 Listed the major events and festivals in your settlement
 Listed the music, food, and holidays in your settlement.
 Wrote a first-hand account of one event in your settlement.
 Drew an illustration that matches the story.
 Wrote an encyclopedia entry about a different event.
 Created a timeline of the history of your settlement that
includes dates and major events.
