Sour Service grades
110 KSI series
Introducing proprietary grades

In sour environments, the presence of H2 S can trigger Sulphide Stress Cracking (SSC) at stresses below the elastic
strength of the material until its rupture. It is important to notice that even at low levels of H2 S high strength's material
are susceptible to SSC phenomenon. When C110 was introduced as sour service grade into API 5CT in 2011 ,
Vallourec already produced 110ksi proprietary grades for sour service application, compliant with the standard NACE
MR0175 I ISO 15156 ar d guaranteeing additional SSC resistance.

Quality of Vallourec is assured by fully integrated process from raw material to threaded product, offering a complete
range of sour service products up to 125ksi, based on optimized combinations of material design , steelmaking , rolling
ind heat treatment, controlled to the most stringent quality program, with fina l SSC resistance proven through NACE
-M0177 testing and supported by an extensive history of more than 10 000 tests .

Vallourec 11 Oksi series combine a large variation of products to fit better with customer needs:
• VM 110 SS : QA/QC according to NACE method A
• VM 110 SS-D : QA/QC according to NACE method D
• Both SS and SS-D variants are also offered combined with High Collapse and Riser properties
• Dedicated Product Specification can be also designed according to specific customer application

Main benefits compared to standard API C110

Fully qualified as S ulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) resistant material

• API has explicitly noted some concerns about the usage of API C110 on both SSC regions 2 and 3, as it is
not suitable for all Sour Service application. Sour Service 11 Oksi VALLOUREC proprietary grades have been
qualified for all SSC regions according to ANSI-NACE MR0175/ISO 151 56-2 standard for both tests method
A and Das per NACE TM0177.

• Wide experi ence on Fit For Purpose testing leadi ng to large database regarding:
- Specific test solution adapted to special well application
- SSC resistance proven at higher ppH 2S up to 7 bar (100 PSI)
- SSC resistance proven at lower temperature down to 2°C (35° F)

• Strong data base of DCB test performed on Casing pipes up to 16" in NACE TM01 77 solution A condition
proven better performances than API minimum requirements.

• Qualification report and more detailed information on test performances are available on request.

Grade % c Si Mn p s Cr Mo Ni Cu
Min . 0.80 0.40
VM 110 SS
Max. 0.35 0.40 1.00 0.020 0.005 1.50 1.00 0.15 0.15

2.2 - Heat treatment

After hot rolling, products are heated to a suitable austenitizing temperature, followed by a quenchi ng to achieve a
martensitic structure.
After quenching, products are tempered at a minim um tempering temperature of 1200°F (650°C).
This heat treatment provides homogeneous properties and a fine grain microstructure ensuring an excellent resistance to
sulfide stress cracking (SSC) .

2.3 - Straightening
After heat treatment, pipes are submitted to either a cold rotary straightening followed by stress relief at 50°F to 100°F
(30°C to 55°C) below the fina l specified tempering temperature, or a hot rotary straightening with an exit temperature not
more than 300°F (165°C) below the final specified tempering temperature.
When necessary, light gag press straightening shall be permitted .

.4 - Run & lot definition

i - A production run is defined as products with the same specified dimensions , grade and typical chemistry which have
been heat-treated using the same process parameters in the same heat-treatment line or equipment, having a recording
controller to provide documentation of heat-treating control through the run, without interruption of more than 4 hours.
ii - A lot is defined as all those lengths with the same specified dimensions and grade, from the same heat of steel, which
are heat-treated as part of a continuous operation or as an individual batch.
iii - A testing lot is a sub-group of a lot with a defined maximum number of products.

2.5 - Traceability
Each casing, coupling material and coupling stock is identified with an individual number through each step of production
after heat treatment so test data can be related to individual length.
Finished couplings are marked by low stress die stamping with the serial number of the mother coupling material or
coupling stock.

I3 - MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
The maximum number of prod ucts per testing lot is:
- 100 for casing ;
- 30 for coupling material and coupling stocks.

14- STRUCTURE
For each size, mass, chemical composition and austenitize-and-quench combination, the as-quenched hardness is
checked on four quadrants of one length of casing , coupling material or coupling stocks for each production run ; a
minimum 95% or 90% of martensite, depending on the wall thickness, is guaranteed by through -wall hardness
measurements. The mean hardness numbers shall equal or exceed :

I HRCm;n = 59 x (%carbon) + 29 for wall thickness < 40 mm (95% Martensite guarantee)

HRCmin =58 x (%carbon) + 27 for wall thickness ~ 40 mm (90% Martensite guarantee)
The grain size is measu'ed in accordance with ASTM E1 12 standard on the same as-quenched specimen and shall be 8
or finer.

Is-SULFIDE STRESS CRACKING (s .s.c.) RESISTANCE

I
VM 110 SS has been qualified as Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) resistant material anywhere within region 3 at any
temperature range, based on tests at ambient temperature, according to NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2 standard table B.1
fnr test method A.

SSC resistance is tested according to method A (tensile test) of NACE TM0177 standard on proof rings.
The test con ditions are the following:
- ppH2S =1 bar = 100% H2S at atmospheric pressure
- NACE solution A
- T0 = 24°C +/- 3°C
The frequency is , per lot for casin g, coupling material and cou pling stocks, at the manufacturer's option:
a) 3 specimens, each one taken from an end of th ree different products, randomly selected from the front one-
third, middle one-third and back one-third of the lot.
If only one of the in itial specimens fails, a retest may be carried out on two furthe r specimens taken from an
area of the product adjacent to where the initial fa iled test specimen wa s taken . If either one of the retest
specimens fails , or if more than one of the initial specimens fails, the lot shall be either rejected or re-heat
treated .
b) 3 sets of 3 specimens , each triplicate coming from an end of three different products, rand om ly selected, from
the front one-third, middle one-third and back one-th ird of the lot. If more than one of the nine initial specimens
fai ls, the lot shall be rejected or re-heat treated .
c) According to an agreement with customer based on an approved process control plan , the frequency of
sampling and testing can be red uced to 1 specimen per lot, taken from one pipe rand omly selected. In case of
a fa ilure of t ri is specimen, a retest may be carried out on two further specimens taken from an area of the
product adjacent to where the in itial failed test specimen was taken . If one or more of the retest specimens
fails , the lot shall be either rejected or re-heat treated.

Specimens are taken at m id-wall and are tested at the following applied stress for f ull-size specimens (0 =0.250 in).

Grade Threshold stress

VM 110 SS 85% SMYS

In case of sub-size specimens (0 = 0.150 in), a red uction factor of 0.9 will be applied on this above threshold stress (i.e.
76,5% SMYS).

I
A specimen with an invalid failure (as per addendum) will be reported and individually replaced by a new specimen. It
shall not be co nsidered n the pass rate criterion and the above-mentioned acceptance criteria will still be applicable.
If the wall thickness does not allow to machine NACE A specimens (sub-size) , NACE C test will be done using same
threshold stress as above (i.e. 85% SMYS) applied on OD surface (closing deflection) .

at 5% of the specified wall thickness on OD and at 10% on ID with a maximum notch length of 25 mm (1 in), for
longitudinal and transverse defects;
for mid wall lam nations of 32 mm 2 .

17- PIPE TESTING

t .1 - Hyd ros tatic test
Each length of casing is submitted in plain end , or threaded conditions to a hydrostatic test:
- duration : 5 seconds
- fiber stress: 80 % SMYS or less due to equipment limitations
Standard test pressure is limited to 10 000 psi according to API 5CT and ISO 11960 specifications.
Higher alternative test pressure may be used by agreement between purchaser and manufacturer.

7.2 - Drift test

A full length drift test is performed, in threaded condition or in plain end condition, in accordance with API 5CT and ISO
11960 specifications.
I Alternative and special drift sizes are available on request.

Ia - PIPE ENDS
Pipes are delivered in tr readed - coupled or integral con ditions, or as plain-end pipes.
I Pipes can be threaded with VAM® premium connections or with API connections.

Addendum

Criteria of invalidity for NACE A test

An SSC test shall be deemed invalid and a replacement test performed , when an assignable cause is identified.
Assignable causes include but are not limited to:
• invalidation criteria as defined in TM0177 linked to testing errors:
o variation of the temperature during the test which leads to a temperature of the test solution out of the
authorized range 24 ± 3°C, as defined in the NACE TM0177
• machining defects on the test specimen reveled after test on the gauge length. Defects which could have been
masked by the polishing step of the specimen
• leak during the test that leads to:
o a deviation of the test-solution-volume to test-specimen-surface-area ratio as defined in the NACE
TM0 177 (30 ± 10 ml/cm 2 )
o a non-immersion in the test solution of the full gauge length of the specimen
• fai lure occurrence with a fracture surface (initiation or fina l rupture) outside the gauge length : "end failure" or
"fi llet failure"
