Lesson: STATES OF MATTER AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS
Unit: MATTER

It is important as you read this lesson that you follow every instruction, step by step
as if your teacher was personally engaged in conversation with you. Do not read
ahead seeing that this will disrupt the layout of the lesson

LESSON OBJECTIVES
1. Identify the states of matter
2. Identify the characteristics of states of matter
3. Discuss the changes in state

INTRODUCTION
Ok, so its scavenger hunt time. Firstly, set up a stopwatch and get ready to time how long
it takes you to run around the house like a crazy person and gather the following items.
(DO NOT READ FURTHER UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE THIS)……………………
READY…..SET…….GO
SOMETHING TO DRINK, A BLOCK OF ICE, SOME AIR FROM THE
REFRIDGERATOR, A PLATE, A HAIR BRUSH,
Ok right about now your parents/guardian or sibling are looking at you like you’re
crazy….and to be honest you probably are ……….WINK. Record your time and post it
up….let’s see who won having the shortest time
Ok now that everyone just had a laugh at you let’s figure out what’s next. Each item that
you have collected based on your lower school (form one to form three) education
classify them from me as solid, liquid, and gases…. Okay, great job. Did you have the
following?
Solids- block of ice, plate, and hairbrush
Liquids- whatever you got to drink
Gases – Air from the refrigerator (only if you brought it in a sealed container)

CLASS ACTIVITY
1. Look at the video on states of matter and answer the followings questions (DO
NOT READ FURTHER UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE THIS)
a. What are the states of matter?
b. Based on your previous knowledge can you define matter?
c. What are the characteristics of gases?

2. Look at the video on changes of state and answer the following questions( DO
NOT READ FURTHER UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE THIS)
a. Can you draw a diagram that depicts the changes of state?
b. What causes changes in the state to occur?
c. Can you list all the changes in the states?
AFTER ATTEMPTING YOUR CLASS ACTIVITY REFER TO CLASS NOTES TO
SEE IF YOUR RESPONSES ARE CORRECT.

CLASS ASSESSMENT
Attempt the short quiz under the CLASS TOPIC QUIZ

HOMEWORK
Create a diagram, flow chart, or a mind map of all the things you have learned about
states of matter.

CLASS WRAP UP
Today you should now be able to identify states of matter and the characteristics as well
