Foundations for Life-long learners
Last September 10, 2021, the University of Mindanao – CTE Field Study 1 group
conducted a series of webinars for the FS 1 students. It was attended by the teachers and
students from the university and is held through online platforms which are the Zoom and
Facebook live. In the morning session, a webinar conducted by Prof. Charmaine V. Bañes,
MAEd,. entitled ‘Foundations for Life-long learner’.

The lecture was about different things about teaching and learning processes. She
introduced us to the VARK model of Fleming and Mills (1992) which I find very useful and
informative since I started to observe a class. She also tackled about the learner-centered
psychological principles which is divided into four factors that contribute to the teaching and
learning process. These are (1) cognitive and metacognitive factors, which refers to the
mental processes, (2) motivational and affective factors, which focuses of emotional
influences of the learner, (3) developmental and social factors, which focuses on the innate
and social ability of the learner, and lastly, (4) the individual differences, which focuses on
the students’ diverse way of learning. We also learned the three elements of teaching which
are the learner, teacher, and the learning environment. The last part talks about the principles
of teaching and learning

As we finished the lecture, I realized that being a teacher is really tough. It takes
courage and passion to become a successful one. As I listened and understand to the
information and examples given by the speaker, I looked backed at my class observations in
the past few days. I now understand why the teacher always give 3-5 minutes of chitchat time
to the students where she will ask how they are doing and what do they miss in a face-to-face
learning setup. It is because it is part of their principle where they must know the students’
feelings, thoughts, and emotions to adjust, give words of wisdom, and maybe help them about
something. It is one way of catching up and building good relationship to the students. The
learners also actively participate in the discussion because the teacher give examples that can
cater the different needs of the students which the VARK model explained us to.

There are a lot of things that we can learn in the lecture. We may have different ways
and process to nurture a child, but all of us has one common goal which is to develop a
lifelong learner for the country. As what our cooperating teacher said, “A student is

successful when he/she knows her being, acknowledges failure, and still continue to strive
hard in life.”

Narrative #2
The Learning Environment
Last September 10, 2021, the University of Mindanao – CTE Field Study 1 group
conducted a series of webinars for the FS 1 students. It was attended by the teachers and
students from the university and is held through online platforms which are the Zoom and
Facebook live. In the morning session, a webinar conducted by Prof. Katherine L. Llup,
MAEd., entitled ‘The Learning Environment’.

The lecture began with the introduction of what is a leaner-centered environment. I

discovered that it is not merely about hand-on activities for the learners, but it also talks about
the balance of power in both teaching and learning. I realized that it is not about how far did
you tackle in the content, but it is about the development of your students. It is very important
to know your learners and design a curriculum/plan that can cater to their different needs. I
also learned that designing physical environment is very crucial for it establishes the mood
and emotion of the students. A healthy school and community relationship is also very
important to foster the needs of the students inside or outside the school premises. School and
community should walk hand-in-hand and work together to give the students a positive
society and culture where they grow as a citizen in the country. I realized that a good
classroom management is needed to address issues and solve the problems that might be a
threat to a fruitful learning of the students. Students must feel secured and must trust
themselves to believe that they can really do it to actually do it.

Teaching is very hard. The lecturer even showed us the different roles that a teacher
must do or is expected to do. There are plenty of things that I have realized in the lecture but
one thing that struck me the most is the heavy expectation that is being given to the
profession, especially on the 21st century where technology is rampant. Today, as the
pandemic worsens, teachers and students are being put into a cell where there is no choice but
to have the school virtually. Challenges such as individual distractive surroundings, internet
connection, lack of support, and anxiety is very evident to the students just like what they
always share in class during my observation. How much more are the teachers? I cannot
imagine the struggle of the teachers during this time – workloads, stress, anxiety, their level

of technological readiness, and the pressure from different point of views. Being a teacher is
really a noble job. I cannot wait to pay back all of their sufferings for me today by being like
them and also pouring my heart out as a teacher and help them raise a 21 st century citizens for
the country.

Narrative #3
The Management of Learning and Learning Process
Last September 10, 2021, the University of Mindanao – CTE Field Study 1 group
conducted a series of webinars for the FS 1 students. It was attended by the teachers and
students from the university and is held through online platforms which are the Zoom and
Facebook live. In the afternoon session, a webinar conducted by Prof. Reita C. Palma, EdD.,
entitled ‘The management of learning and learning process’.

The lecture started by introducing to us the different theories of learning which are
behaviorism, cognitive, and social constructivist theory. These theories of learning are very
essential for us to know because it aids us on what to use effectively in the classroom. It will
help us to manage our classrooms effectively. The lecture also lectured about the guidelines
of the principles of learning where it made me realize that there are plenty of ways that the
students can learn and acquire new knowledge, develop their own skills, and value things
more effectively. In a classroom where there are different needs of the students, it is nice to
know that we can cater them all by using these guiding principles. We must also
acknowledge the multiple intelligence of the students to create an environment where
everyone can do their part in the best possible way. We must embrace and accept the
differences, come up with different possible ways and solutions, and create an environment
that hones different individual skills and talents of the learners where they can feel that they
belong. The strategies and possible activities that were presented are very useful for me in the
future. Classroom management techniques were also presented during the lecture. It made me
realize the importance of a good classroom management by establishing control, create
regulations, build relationship, and determine the needs and problems of the students because
it will help them to be successful.

All these things and more are the lessons I realized during the webinar. Today, as we
continue our class observation, I get to understand what, how, and why does the teacher
chose this specific activity rather than the others. The rules and regulations that were posted
to the class are also a big help to help create a good flow for the class. It also taught me how

to react when students misbehave by incorporating these lectures strategies. It must also be
noted that we, teachers, must do our job and constantly give them encouragement and
acknowledgement to boost their morale and motivation to continue to study. This webinar
really helped me a lot to understand more the principles of teaching and learning and how to
have a good classroom management. I cannot wait to use these things when I become teacher
someday.
