ACIDS

 An acid is a chemical substance that ionizes in water to

produce hydrogen ions, H+ .
Example: When hydrogen chloride gas is dissolved in water,
hydrogen chloride molecules will ionize in water to produce
hydrogen ions, H+ and chloride ions, Cl-. Hydrogen ions, H+
produced will combine with the water molecules,  H2O to
form hydroxonium ions,  H₃O⁺.

BASICITY OF ACIDS
 Basicity of an acid is the number of ionisable hydrogen
atoms per acid molecule.

Monoprotic acid Diprotic acid Triprotic acid

Hydrochloric acid is
known as a Sulphuric acid, Phosphoric acid,
monoprotic acid. H₂SO₄ produces H3PO4 produces
This acid contains two H+ ions per three H+ ions per
only one ionisable acid molecule acid molecule
hydrogen atom,
producing only one
hydrogen ion
(proton) per
molecule of acid.
