This lesson will help the learners to master viewing as the fifth macro
skill in learning the English language more specifically on identifying the
genre of a material viewed on TV, internet or other media platforms.

Viewing refers to perceiving, examining, interpreting, and construction of


meaning from visual images and is crucial to improving your
comprehension of print and non-print materials. This is a skill you should
master as you are exposed to multimedia.

Our daily living highly involves visual media such that the television and
online platform allows us to become active in the modern way of
communicating around the world.
Viewing helps you understand the message by seeking and checking
understanding. It is classified according to its purpose and type of
information presented. The classification of viewing is called genres of
viewing.

Materials that can be viewed vary depending on their genres and


platforms. As TV is the We see advertisements, films, diagrams,
symbols, photographs, videos, drama, drawings, sculpture and paintings
in a daily basis that pave way to developing the viewing skill, as the fifth
macro skill of learning English language.

Most common platform used in viewing, online resources has been


widely used nowadays for video access. Presented below are some of
video genres which you may encounter.

a. A news flash is a single item of important news that is aired


separately and often interrupts other programs.
Example: 24 Oras News Alert, Flash Report
b. A weather report is usually a part of an entire news program that tells
and foretells weather conditions on a specific area.
Example: I AM Ready
c. An internet-based program is a program that is informative and can
be accessed through website.
Example: Deped Commons, Slideshare, Yahoo, YouTube
d. Movie trailer is a short clip from a film while movie itself is the long
version.
Examples: Seven Sundays, One More Chance, Hello, Love, Goodbye
e. Documentary is a research-based reporting that deals with a specific
topic and format.
Example: Frontrow, No Filter, I-Witness
