Activity: Literary Critique


Instruction: Students are required to read and analyze the story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar
Allan Poe.

Plot
Exposition Montresor was insulted a couple of times and is upset and wants to seek
revenge to his enemy, Fortunato, a wine taster. Fortunato is not aware of
Montresor considering him as his enemy.
Rising Action Montresor brings Fortunato to his catacombs to taste his Amontillado.
Climax Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall of catacombs. He ignores Fortunato
as he shouts and begged for mercy. He built a wall in front of him.
Falling Action Fortunato stops screaming, only Montresor can hear was his jingling bells
from his costume. Montresor continued building the wall.
Denouement Fortunato is dead. Montresor had finished building the wall and put the piles
of bone back against the wall where half of a century now, no one has ever
touched them.
Setting
Time and Geographic An underground catacomb, somewhere in Italy, during the carnival season.
Location
Mood/Emotions Threatening, suspenseful, and ominous.
Cultural Wine has always been connected with the culture of a society. The
consumption of wine may refer to celebration, and celebration is tied to the
social customs and beliefs of a culture.
Political The story features revenge and secret murder as a way to avoid using legal
channels for retribution.
Religious Interweaves religion into a dark tale revenge. The character of Montresor is
quite evil as it was shown from the scene where Fortunato begged for mercy
and told him “for the love of God!” which Montresor didn’t listen to him.
