A. Invite to think of something else

In counseling, the technique of asking to think about something else, is

done by the counselor if the client finds a dead-end solution, to find another
solution that is more likely, this is done because; (1) in life we must have many
choices, and (2) not all the hopes we hope for can come true.

The invitation to think about something else happens a lot at the coaching
stage. This technique is more likely to invite clients to think of something else that
is better. In making an invitation to think of something else the counselor must be
careful to avoid confusion of the client. An invitation to think about something
else the counselor can do and the client can do. The invitation to think of
something else should take into account the strengths of the client because the
technique of asking to think of something else can also change the subject.

The sample dialog below:

Client: My lecturer gives lecture material in soft copy. I find it difficult to read the
material on the computer. In the end I'm worried about the approaching exam.

Counselor: What if you make the Soft Copy to Hard Copy?

B. Concluding the conversation

Summing up is the process of putting together all that has been informed
during a particular part or all of the counseling meeting. Some facts in concluding
in the counseling process, namely concluding can be done at the beginning,
middle or end of counseling activities. Besides that, in concluding, use the word
"so", while in reflection, do not use the word "so".

The purpose of making conclusions, namely: (1) so that the counselor and
client understand what is the main point of the problem being discussed, what has
been done or carried out and what has not, (2) ended or closed a certain part or
stage of the conversation or started something. new ones, (3) making conclusions
that the counselor does not have to do it but can be done by the client. and (4) will
give the impression that the counselor is doing 3-M, so that the client will be
encouraged to develop a conversation about the next topic.

Conclusions can be divided into 2 (two) kinds, namely: (1) partial

conclusions, and (2) conclusions from the whole counseling process. With that
conclusion, the counselor and the client together try to raise the main points of the
problem discussed by stating what has been done and what has not. The
conclusions drawn are: the core of the conversation, the core of the problem and
the solution that will be taken or carried out by the client.

Example:

Let's try to put everything we've talked about together. In a way you feel
lonely and separated from friends. On the other hand, you say that you find it
difficult to get along. So, even if you want to get acquainted with others, it's not
easy to get started. Is that right?
C. Providing Information

The technique of providing information is not foreign to us because it is

often also called the lecture method, namely giving an explanation by a speaker to
a group of listeners. It can also be given in writing, for example, on guidance
boards, school magazines, recordings, leaflets, videos, and films.

Implementation of the technique of providing information includes three

things:

 Planning
 Implementation
 Assessment (Jacobsen, et al. 1985 in Tatiek Romlah MA)

The advantages of information-giving techniques: can serve many people, do

not require many people so that they are efficient, do not use too many facilities to
carry out, easy to implement, if the speaker is good at using pictures with words
the material will be interesting.

The disadvantages of the information-giving technique are: usually there is

help so it is boring, the individual who listens is less active, requires speaking
skills so that the explanation becomes interesting.

To overcome the weaknesses of providing information:

 It is necessary to rethink whether the method used is appropriate to be

given to individuals who are mentored,
 Prepare information materials as well as possible,
 Prepare the material yourself so that the counselee can learn it,
 Try a variety of delivery so that listeners become more active,
 Use a variety of tools that can clarify the listener's understanding of the
material presented.
