Non-continuous Verbs (Stative Verbs expressing a state rather than an action)

Non-continuous verbs are verbs that we do not normally use with continuous tenses.
These "stative" verbs are about state, not action, and they cannot express the
continuous or progressive aspect. Here are some of the most common non-
continuous verbs:
 feeling: hate, like, love, prefer, want, wish
 senses: appear, feel, hear, see, seem, smell, sound, taste
 communication: agree, deny, disagree, mean, promise, satisfy, surprise
 thinking: believe, imagine, know, mean, realize, recognize, remember,
understand
 other states: be, belong, concern, depend, involve, matter, need, owe, own,
possess, etc.
Some exceptions: think as a process: He’s thinking about his future job. (Fr. Réfléchir)
BUT: I think she is right NOT *I’m thinking she is right (Fr. Penser)
See as a process: I see what you mean (Je vois / comprends) Not *I’m seeing what
you mean.
BUT: I’m seeing you at 12.00 (In the sense of meeting you at 12.00)
Some other examples are:
Have
I have an old car. (state – possession)
I'm having a quick break. (action – having a break is an activity)

See
Do you see any problems with that? (state – opinion)
We're seeing Tadanari tomorrow afternoon. (action – we're meeting him)

Be
He's so interesting! (state – his permanent quality)
He's being very unhelpful. (action – he is temporarily behaving this way)

Taste
This coffee tastes delicious. (state – our perception of the coffee)
Look! The chef is tasting the soup. (action – tasting the soup is an activity)

Others: agree, appear, doubt, feel, guess, hear, imagine, look, measure, remember,
smell, weigh, wish.
