TOPIC: SLAB DESIGN
Q1: Figure Q1 shows a single storey ground floor plan of a single storey reinforced concrete
residential house. For design and construction purposes, all slabs and the beam are casting
integrally. All slabs subjected to a characteristic permanent action of 1.3 kN/m2 (excluding self-
weight). The slab panel has to be designed for a maximum characteristic variable action referring
to BS EN 1991-1-1:2002. Based on the information provide;
(a) Sketch the structural plan layout for the ground floor.
(b) Determine the ultimate bending moment for slab panel at Bedroom 1.
(c) During construction, the house owner asked to replace all slab panels to non-
suspended. With aid of sketches, briefly discuss the consequence of the replacement
on its design and construction.

Q2: Figure Q2 (a) shows 10 temporary water tanks placed on top of an existing reinforced
concrete floor slab (A-F/1-3) with 22.5 m total length and 21 m total width. Each water tank is 2.5
m diameter and 2.5 m height and placed in the middle of each floor panel (the self-weight of the
water tanks is negligible). The water tanks are for temporarily storing and supplying water to the
nearby buildings. Given as follows are the characteristic design data for the existing floor slab:
(b) Determine the ultimate bending moment and shear forces for continues slab (A-
F/2-3). Assume loading from the water tank is distributed uniformly to the whole
slab.
(c) Figure Q2 (b) shows the detailing of the existing floor slab. Referring to the
existing detailing, check all the flexural reinforcement, shear and cracking of the
slabs based on current situation and discuss the design output.

TOPIC: STAIRCASE DESIGN
Q3: Figure Q3 shows the side view of a reinforced concrete staircase for hospital building. It was
connected by two level of slabs showing the detailing of main reinforcement and secondary
reinforcement. The staircase has maximum characteristic of variable action, while finishes and
handrails is 1.2 kN/mm2. All beam sizes are 250 mm x 500 mm.
(a) Determine the most suitable size of going as required on BS 5395 comfortness
guideline for this staircase.
(b) Analyse the actions of staircase, then draw bending moment and shear force diagram
with the important values.
(c) Check the shear resistance of the staircase if provided main bar is H12-200.
(d) Check the maximum bar spacing for both reinforcement if the required main bar is 515
mm2/m.

Q4: Figure Q4 shows the plan layout of staircases (sections STR1 and STR2) at the first-floor
level of a hall. After the first flight of the staircase (STR1), it breaks into two staircases (STR2)
spanning on the right and left angle. The staircases are supported by beams while a landing is
shared at the intermediate stage a longitudinal spanning monolithic staircase with two flights. The
overall depth of landing and waist of the flight is 150 mm. Given the following data:
Riser = 175 mm
Going = 250 mm
Finishes = 1.0 kN/m2
Variable action = 4.0 kN/m2
Characteristic strength of concrete, fck = 30 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of steel reinforcement, fyk = 500 N/mm2
Nominal concrete cover = 30 mm
Assume bar diameter = 12 mm
a) By applying the beam size of 200x200 mm at both ends, sketch the both staircase STR1
and STR2 including the effective span of the system.
b) Calculate the design action and bending moment of both staircases and draw the actions
and the maximum bending moment. State the important values.

Q5:Figure Q5 shows a staircase for a building. Landing slab A is supported on beams along AB
and FE, while the waist-slab and landing slab B are supported longitudinally along CD, as shown
in the figure. The finish loads and live loads are 1 kN/m 2and 5 kN/m2 respectively. Use riser R =
160 mm, trade T = 270 mm, waist = 200 mm, concrete grade = 25 N/mm2 and steel grade = 500
N/mm2, fctm = 2.6 N/mm2, unit weight of concrete = 25 kN/m3, cover 25 mm, Øbar = 12 mm.
(c) Design the main reinforcement of the landing slab A and sketch the reinforcement
detailing.
(d) Check shear resistance, deflection, cracking and provide detailing for staircase.
