AUXILIARY SPEED OR AUXILIARY PRESSURE INPUT

CUMMINS ERROR

FAULT CODE: 349

PID: P191
SPN: 191

Auxiliary Speed or Auxiliary Pressure Input Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The auxiliary speed input is a frequency signal from an auxiliary
speed or pressure pickup. It is sent to the electronic control
module (ECM) and is used to control the engine speed. Auxiliary
reference speed is based on the throttle position.
The auxiliary speed governor controls engine speed based on a
measured auxiliary speed or pressure. The auxiliary speed governor
feature must be enabled in the calibration and set properly for
speed or pressure, depending on the OEM application.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The auxiliary speed or pressure pickup device location is dependent
on the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) application. Refer
to OEM troubleshooting and repair manual for component location.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and read the fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

No other Fault codes?

Yes - Go to 2A No - Troubleshoot other fault codes first with

appropriate fault tree

Step 2A)Refer to the OEM troubleshooting and repair manual for proper function of the auxiliary device.
Check for slipping clutches or broken driveline components. Measure OEM pressure to verify proper OEM
equipment function.

Auxiliary device functioning properly?

Yes - Go to 3A for auxiliary speed applications; 4A No - Repair the auxiliary device

for auxiliary pressure applications. Go to 6A

Step 3A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary speed sensor. Inspect
the OEM harness and the sensor connectors for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 3B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness or sensor,

whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 6A

Step 3B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary speed sensor.
Check the auxiliary speed sensor for the proper adjustment (if adjustable).

½ to ¾ of a turn out from the gear?

Yes - Go to 3C No - Adjust the auxiliary speed sensor

Go to 6A

Step 3C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary speed sensor. Check the
auxiliary speed sensor for the correct resistance. Measure the resistance from pin A to pin B for each
auxiliary speed sensor connector on the sensor side.

750 to 1500 ohms?

Yes - Go to 3D No - Replace the auxiliary speed sensor

Go to 6A

Step 3D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary speed sensor. Check the
auxiliary speed sensor for a short circuit to ground. Measure the resistance from pin A on the sensor side of
the auxiliary speed sensor connector to engine block ground. Measure the resistance from pin B on the
sensor side of the auxiliary speed sensor connector to engine block ground.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 3E No - Replace the auxiliary speed sensor

Go to 6A

Step 3E) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary speed sensor. Check the
auxiliary speed sensor for a short circuit between coils. Measure the resistance from pin A on the sensor
side of one of the auxiliary speed sensor connectors to pin A of the other connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 4A No - Replace the auxiliary speed sensor

Go to 6A

Step 4A) Turn keyswitch to the OFF position and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary pressure
sensor. Inspect the sensor and OEM harness connectors for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 4B No - Go to 6A

Step 4B) Turn key switch ON and disconnect the OEM connector from the ECM. Measure voltage. Measure
pin 48 to engine block ground.

(+)0.5 to 4.5 VDC?

Yes - Go to 5A No - Replace pressure sensor

Go to 6A

Step 5A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Inspect the OEM harness
and the ECM connectors for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Dirt or debris in or on the connector pins

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 5B No -Repair or replace the OEM harness or OEM

interface harness, whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 6A

Step 5B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the auxiliary speed or pressure input signal sending unit. Check for an open circuit. Measure
the resistance from pin 8 of the OEM harness to pin A of the OEM harness, auxiliary speed sensor, from pin
18 to pin B, and from pin 48 to pin X.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 5C No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 6A

Step 5C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the auxiliary speed or pressure sensor. Check for a short circuit to ground. Measure the
resistance from pin 18, from pin 8 of the OEM harness to engine block ground, and from pin 48 of the OEM
harness to engine block ground.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 5D No - Replace the OEM harness

Step 5D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the auxiliary speed or pressure sensor. Check for a short circuit from pin to pin. Measure the
resistance from pin 18 of the OEM harness connector to all other pins in the connector, from pin 8 of the
OEM harness connector to all other pins in the connector, and from pin 48 of the OEM harness connector to
all other pins in the connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 6A No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 6A

Step 6A) Connect all components and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let idle for 1 minute.

Fault Code 349 inactive?

Yes - Go to 6B No - Return to the troubleshooting steps or contact

local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all
steps have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 6B) Connect all components and clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
