Cummins: Fault Code: 488 PID: P105 SPN: 105 FMI: 0
Cummins: Fault Code: 488 PID: P105 SPN: 105 FMI: 0
DESCRIPTION
The intake manifold air temperature sensor is used by the
electronic control module (ECM) to monitor the temperature of
the engine intake air. The intake air temperature is used by the
ECM for the engine protection system, and the timing and fueling
control.
This is a warning fault code. If the intake manifold air temperature
continues to rise, Fault Code 155 will become active and shut down
the engine.
Possible causes: - clogged, dirty, inadequate capacity air cleaner
element; faulty fan clutch.-intake restriction
COMPONENT LOCATION
The intake manifold temperature sensor is located on the side of
the intake manifold, toward the rear of the cylinder head, near
cylinder No. 6.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and verify the sensor accuracy with a thermocouple or similar temperature
probe. Connect the temperature probe to the engine near the intake manifold air temperature sensor.
Connect diagnostic tool to the datalink. Run the engine, and compare the intake manifold temperature
sensor reading on the diagnostic tool monitor screen to the reading from the temperature probe.
NOTE: If a temperature measuring device is not available, answer “Yes “to this step.
NOTE: Readings will, perhaps, need to be checked while engine is operating at normal temperature
conditions (180°F coolant).
Sensor reading correct within °5F?
Yes - Locate and repair the cause of high intake No - Refer to Fault Code 154

Go to 2A
Step 2A) Connect all the components. Turn key switch ON and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and
let idle for 1 minute. Load and operate engine to typical operating temperature (180°F coolant). Using the
diagnostic tool, verify that Fault Code 488 is inactive and did not reoccur.
Step 2B) Connect all components and turn key switch ON. Clear the inactive fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.
All fault codes cleared?
