CUMMINS ERROR
DESCRIPTION
The auxiliary speed input is a frequency signal from an auxiliary
speed or pressure pickup. It is sent to the electronic control
module (ECM) and is used to control the engine speed. Auxiliary
reference speed is based on the throttle position.
The auxiliary speed governor controls engine speed based on a
measured auxiliary speed or pressure. The auxiliary speed governor
feature must be enabled in the calibration and set properly for
speed or pressure, depending on the OEM application.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The auxiliary speed or pressure pickup device location is dependent
on the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) application. Refer
to OEM manual for component location.
TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and read the fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

Step 2A) Refer to the OEM troubleshooting and repair manual. Refer to the OEM troubleshooting and repair
manual for proper function of the auxiliary device. Check for slipping clutches or broken driveline
components. Measure OEM pressure to verify proper OEM equipment function.
Step 3A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary speed sensor. Inspect
the OEM harness and the sensor connectors for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals
No damaged pins?
Step 3B) Turn key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary speed
sensor. Check the auxiliary speed sensor for the proper adjustment (if adjustable).
Step 3C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary speed sensor. Check the
auxiliary speed sensor for the correct resistance. Measure the resistance from pin A to pin B for each
auxiliary speed sensor connector on the sensor side.

750 to 1500 ohms?
Step 3D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary speed sensor. Check the
auxiliary speed sensor for a short circuit to ground. Measure the resistance from pin A on the sensor side of
the auxiliary speed sensor connector to engine block ground, and from pin B on the sensor side of the
auxiliary speed sensor connector to engine block ground.

Step 3E) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary speed sensor. Check the
auxiliary speed sensor for a short circuit between coils. Measure the resistance from pin A on the sensor
side of one of the auxiliary speed sensor connectors to pin A of the other connector.
Step 4A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the auxiliary pressure sensor. Inspect
the sensor and OEM harness connectors for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals
No bent pins?
Yes - Go to 4B No - Go to 6A
Step 4B) Turn key switch ON and disconnect the OEM connector from the ECM. Measure voltage and
measure pin 48 to engine block ground.

Step 5A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM harness. Inspect the OEM
harness and the ECM connectors for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins, moisture in or on the connector
• Dirt or debris in or on the connector pins
No damaged pins?
Step 5B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the auxiliary speed or pressure sensor. Check for an open circuit. Measure the resistance
from pin 8 of the OEM harness connector to pin A of the OEM harness, auxiliary speed sensor, from pin 18
to pin B and from pin 48 of the OEM harness connector to pin X of the OEM harness, auxiliary speed
sensor.
Step 5C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the auxiliary speed or pressure sensor. Check for a short circuit to ground. Measure the
resistance from pin 18 of the OEM harness to engine block ground, from pin 8 and from pin 48 of the OEM
harness to engine block ground.

Step 5D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the auxiliary speed or pressure sensor. Check for a short circuit from pin to pin. Measure the
resistance from pin 18 of the OEM harness to all other pins in the connector, from pin 8 and from pin 48 of
the OEM harness to all other pins in the connector.
Step 6A) Connect all components and disable the fault code. Stat engine, and let it idle for 1 minute.
Step 6B) Connect all components and clear inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool.
