SWITCHED DROOP SELECTION CIRCUIT

CUMMINS

FAULT CODE: 524

PID: P113
FMI: 2

Switched Droop Selection Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The switched droop circuit allows the operator to select from up
to three preprogrammed droop governor values using a two- or
three-position switch, depending on which value the original
equipment manufacturer (OEM) has provided.
The switch should be monitored for proper operation on the
diagnostic tool. If the switch is changing state correctly on the
service tool, then the problem does not lie in the switch circuit.
The three-position switch has three states:
- Position 1 – open
- Position 2 - closed
- Position 3 - 1500-ohm resistance.
The two-position switch has two states:
- Position 1 - open
- Position 2 - closed.

COMPONENT LOCATION
The location of the droop switch circuit varies with each OEM and
equipment model. Refer to the OEM manual.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Inspect the engine
harness and the ECM connector pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing connector seal
No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 1B No - Repair the damaged pins

Go to 4A

Step 1B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the OEM harness at the 23-pin
connector. Disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Check for an open circuit. Measure the resistance
from pin 24 of the engine harness connector to pin V of the OEM 23-pin connector.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 1C No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 4A

Step 1C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the OEM harness at the 23-pin
connector. Disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Check for a short to ground. Measure the
resistance from pin 24 of the engine harness connector to engine block ground.

Greater than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 1D No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 4A

Step 1D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the OEM harness at the 23-pin
connector. Disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Check for a short to all other pins in the connector.
Measure resistance from pin 24 of the engine harness ECM connector to all other pins in the connector.

Greater than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2A No - Replace the engine harness

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the engine harness at the 23-pin
connector. Inspect the OEM harness and the engine harness connector pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Repair or replace the OEM interface harness or

the OEM harness, whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 4A

Step 2B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the engine harness at the 23-pin
connector. Disconnect the OEM harness from the droop select switch. Check for an open circuit. Measure
the resistance from pin V of the OEM harness 23-pin connector to the appropriate pin of the droop select
switch connector.
Less than 10 ohms?

Yes – Go to 2C No - Repair or replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 2C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the OEM 23-pin connector.
Disconnect the OEM harness from the droop select switch. Check for a short to ground. Measure the
resistance from pin V of the OEM harness 23-pin connector to engine block ground.

Greater than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2D No - Repair or replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 2D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the OEM 23-pin connector.
Disconnect the OEM harness from the droop select switch. Check for a short from pin to pin. Measure the
resistance from pin V of the OEM harness 23-pin connector to all other pins in the connector.

Greater than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 3A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM switch circuit from the OEM. Inspect OEM switch
pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or extended pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on switch
No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 3B Yes - Repair or replace the OEM harness or the

OEM switches, whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 4A

Step 3B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the 23-pin OEM harness connector.
Check resistance in position 2. Position the droop selection switch to the No. 2 position. Measure the
resistance from pin V of the OEM 23-pin connector to the engine block ground.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 3C No - Repair or replace the switch or OEM Harness

Go to 4A

Step 3C) Turn key switch to the OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the 23-pin OEM harness
connector. Check resistance in position 3. Position the droop selection switch to the No. 3 position. Measure
the resistance from pin V of the OEM 23-pin connector to the engine block ground.
NOTE: Step 3C can only be performed if the OEM has provided a three-position switch.

Between 1000 and 2000 ohms?

Yes - Go to 4A No - Repair or replace the switch or OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 4A) Connect all components and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let idle for 1 minute.
Verify that Fault Code 524 is inactive.

Fault Code 524 inactive?

Yes - Go to 4B No - Return to troubleshooting steps or contact local

Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all steps
have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 4B) Connect all components and clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool.
