Dual-Output Driver A

DESCRIPTION
The dual-output driver A will control engine and vehicle functions
by controlling original equipment manufacturers (OEM) devices
based on up to 12 selected engine parameters and two selected
OEM parameters (OEM switch input and OEM pressure input). The
solenoid output will control functions like a fan clutch, air cleaner
restriction indicator, or an oil filter differential pressure indicator.

COMPONENT LOCATION
The OEM device is dependent upon the OEM.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and check for extra wires going to the OEM device.

No extra wires?

Yes - Go to 1B No - Remove the extra wires


Go to 3A

Step 1B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the control wire from the OEM device. Clean the OEM device
post and the wiring terminal or OEM connectors. Clean the post of the device and the terminal or connectors
for the control wire of the OEM harness.
Clean?

Yes - Go to 1C No - Repair ring terminal or replace the OEM Device


Go to 3A

Step 1C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness. Check the shutoff resistance and measure
the resistance from the OEM device to engine block ground.

Check OEM device resistance

Yes - Refer to OEM specifications No - Repair the OEM device

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Check the ECM and OEM
harness connector pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness or ECM,


whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 3A

Step 2B) Turn key switch ON and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the OEM device. Check for an open circuit. Measure the resistance from pin 5 on the ECM
side of the OEM harness connector to the OEM device connector.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 2C No - Replace the OEM harness


Go to 3A

Step 2C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the OEM device. Check for a short in the OEM device supply wire to ground. Measure the
resistance from pin 5 to engine block ground.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes – gGo to 2D No - Replace OEM harness


Go to 3A

Step 2D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the OEM device. Check for a short circuit from pin to pin. Measure the resistance from pin 5 to
all other wires in the OEM harness connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Replace the OEM harness


Go to 3A

Step 3A) Connect all components and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let idle for 1 minute.

Fault Code 527 inactive?

Yes - Go to 3B No - Return to troubleshooting steps or contact local


Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all steps
have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 3B) Connect all components and clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes


with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
