3 (c) Specific Latent Heat of Vaporisation

LIQUID TO GAS

LV is called the Specific Latent Heat of Vaporisation. The Specific Latent

Heat of Vaporisation is the amount of energy needed to change one
kilogram of a particular liquid to a gas at the same temperature.

The specific latent heat of vaporisation is the amount of energy needed to

change 1kg of a liquid to a gas without changing the temperature.

We know that,
Q∝m

Q = mLv
Q
LV =
m

In order to measure LV, the following quantities must be measured:

1. m - the amount of material changing from a liquid to gas (vapour)

2. Q - the amount of energy delivered

The mass changing state can be measured using a top-pan balance.

Q.1.How much heat is needed to change 0.5 kg of water at room

temperature of 20oC to the ice at 0oC?
The specific heat capacity of water is 4200 J/kgoC and specific latent
heat of fusion of ice = 330,000 J/kg.

Q.2. Calculate the amount of heat energy required to melt 0.2 kg of ice
from -10oC into the water at 100oC. The specific heat capacity of ice is
2100 J/kgoC, for water 4200 J/kgoC and specific latent heat of fusion of
ice = 330,000 J/kg.
