Miss Spacht’s Fourth Grade Unit on

Fractions!
Hello Families!
For the next two weeks your children will be learning all about fractions. Fractions are a
very important part of everyday life, they are used almost daily! For example, when your
children help make recipes or when you have to decide how to cut a cake into equal parts.
During the fractions unit, your children will be introduced to the specific parts of a fraction,
such as numerator and denominator. They will also look at writing fractions on a number
line and using fraction tiles/bar to see the values of fractions. They will also be adding and
subtracting fractions with like denominators as well as adding mixed numbers with like
denominators. To complete this unit on fractions and to see how fractions can be applied in
real life, your children will be creating their own fraction pizzas! During this activity, the
students will show their knowledge of fractions when they each create their own personal
pizzas and real life fraction problems about their pizzas. If you have any questions or
concerns you can email or call me anytime, my contact information can be found on the
school website.

Below you will find the schedule of the unit plan and other resource/activities to support
