Q.4. Amal carried out the following five experiments to investigate the change in temperature of
water on adding 4 different solids, A, B, C and D to water.

Experiment 1
He poured 25cm3 of distilled water to a beaker and noted its initial temperature. Amal then
added 5 g of solid A, stirred the mixture for a minute and noted the temperature again.

Experiment 2
He repeated using 5 g of solid B

Experiment 3
He repeated using 5 g of solid C

5
Experiment 4
He repeated using 5 g of solid D

Experiment 5
He mixed some of the solution from Experiment 2 to some of the solution from
Experiment 3. He now observed vigorous bubbling.
(a) Note down the initial and final temperatures in Table 4.1 using the thermometer diagrams
shown.
Complete Table 4.1 by determining the temperature difference.

(b) Answer the following questions using the observations from Experiments 1-5.

(i) Which soild/s dissolve/s in water to produce endothermic reaction/s?

(ii) Give a reason for your choice in (i)
