QPS010
Quartz Pressure - Single Sensor Chapter 1. Description

1 DESCRIPTION

The Sondex Quartz Pressure Tool measures pressure and Gauge temperature,
using an industry standard precision quartz crystal pressure transducer.

A Quartzdyne QHB pressure gauge, with bellows to isolate the quartz crystal
from well fluids, is fitted to the lower tool body.

Pressure access is via a single filtered port. A second flushing port, available for
use during maintenance, is plugged whilst running in hole.

The QPS010 operates on memory and directly takes its power from and feeds its
data to the memory tool.

1.1 OPERATING PRINCIPLE

Wellbore pressure is transmitted through an isolating metal bellows to a volume

of silicone oil, which surrounds the quartz pressure crystal. Changes in
hydrostatic pressure alter the resonant frequency.

A second crystal, not subjected to external pressure, provides temperature

compensation and allows calculation of precision, high resolution pressures.

1.2 PURPOSE

• Draw-Down & Build-Up Pressure Transient Analysis.

• Down-Hole Pressure Gradient Measurement.

1.3 INTERFACING & TOOL COMBINATIONS

• Mbus or SRO.

Note that the Mbus QPS interfaces direct to MPL, XMW and XSH telemetry tools
only. It may be used for memory or SRO logging.

Quartz Pressure - Single Sensor Chapter 2. Safety

2 SAFETY

2.1 GENERAL

HOT WORK! Sondex equipment may, under certain circumstances or failure

Warning! modes, become a potential source of ignition. Using it must therefore be
considered "HOT WORK" and appropriate precautionary procedures should be
followed when testing at surface in areas where there is a risk of gas leaks or other
potentially explosive atmospheres.

2.2 LUBRICANTS

Dow Corning 200

Silicone (Dow Corning 200 or equivalent) pressure fluid is used inside the transducer housing to
protect the crystal from contact with well fluid. This is a potential eye irritant. If fluid comes
into contact with the eyes, flush with copious quantities of water for 15 minutes, and visit a doctor
as soon as possible. For more details see the Material Safety Data Sheet for Dow Corning
Silicone.

Liquid O-ring

LOR101 is used for lubricating the tool during maintenance. Contact with skin or eyes can be
harmful. For more details see the Material Safety Data Sheet for Liquid O-ring.

2.3 TRANSDUCER PROTECTION

The Quartzdyne Gauge should not normally be removed from the Lower Sub, since the Seal is
maintenance free.

The Bellows must not be unscrewed from the Gauge, otherwise the calibration will be invalid.

The Quartzdyne Gauge is hard-wired to the QPS Electronics. Care is required during maintenance
since incorrect application of power to the Gauge may cause damage.

The Pressure Transducer is a quartz crystal. The crystal will not be vibration-damaged under
normal well logging conditions, but high frequency (i.e. metal to metal) shock perpendicular to the
axis of the QPS should be avoided.

2.4 ELECTRO STATIC DISCHARGE

Electro Static Discharge (ESD)

Caution! All tools with electronic boards that contain solid state circuits (transistors, diodes,
semiconductors) may become damaged when contacted with an electrostatic
charge.

When handling tools, which contain electronic parts that are ESD sensitive, the following guidelines
should be followed to reduce any possible electrostatic charge build-up on the user’s body and the
electronic parts:

• Always ensure proper ESD precautions are taken when handling electronic parts that
are ESD sensitive during maintenance.
• Avoid touching the tool electronics, unless stated otherwise in this manual.

Note that ESD is less likely to affect tools when the housing is fitted.

2.5 DEADWEIGHT TESTING

Only qualified personnel should apply dead-weight testers to the pressure port, see
Warning! Section 7.2 Pressure Calibration. Use adequate precautions against excessive
pressure. In a lab environment, limit test pressures to 10,000psi and allow no
bystanders.
Precautions are required to allow for high pressure blow out through the flushing
port in the event of failure.

2.6 POST LOGGING TRAPPED PRESSURE

Beware internally trapped pressure when removing tool attached below QPS.

2.7 UPPER HEAD / MEMORY TOOL LEMO PLUG PROTECTION

Under no circumstances should the QPS Housing be rotated relative to its Lower
Caution! Sub until the Memory Electronics have been removed from the top of the QPS
Housing.

In use, the QPS010 has Memory Electronics attached to the top of the QPS Housing. The Electrical
connection is made with an 8-pin Lemo Connection and will NOT rotate relative to the Memory
Electronics.

Quartz Pressure - Single Sensor Chapter 3. Theory Of Operation

3 THEORY OF OPERATION

3.1 DESCRIPTION

A Quartz Pressure Gauge is screwed and sealed with a compressable metal ‘olive’ Seal into a
Lower Sub, which has ports to the outside to allow well pressure into the Gauge.

Electronics interfaces the sensor signals to the Memory toolbus.

Quartz Pressure Sensor

Pressure enters through the well port in the Lower Sub and acts on the Gauge Bellows, which is
filled with silicone oil during manufacture. The Bellows isolates the quartz pressure crystal from the
aggressive well fluids while transmitting the pressure.

Note that the Bellows may introduce error at atmospheric pressure.

A second "flushing" port, which is blocked off while logging, allows the well port to be flushed clean
during maintenance.

The crystal resonance frequency depends on pressure and temperature, hence the Gauge
incorporates a second "temperature" crystal, thermally coupled to the first, which is not subjected to
well pressure. A 7.2MHz clock, used to down shift the pressure and temperature crystal
frequencies, is output as a time reference for frequency measurement. Gauge output pressure and
temperature frequencies lie in the range 15-60kHz, see Figure 3.2 and Figure 3.3.

Quartz Pressure - Single Sensor Chapter 4. Operating Procedure

4 OPERATING PROCEDURE

Ref.: General Assembly 05017

4.1 PRE-LOGGING CHECKS

The Sondex memory tool requires a sychronising telemetry clock. For the pressure to be accurate,
this must be the pressure tool, if present.

Memory Setup

The normal 10MHz clock internal to the Memory Section must be disabled and the link made to
take the 7.2MHz Quartz Gauge reference signal.

4.1.1 MECHANICAL

1 Clean and grease lower and upper O-ring seals (items 18 & 19). Replace O-rings if dam-
aged.

2 If present, remove the Transport Screw Plug (item 24) from the Pressure Port in the
Lower Sub (item 2) before logging to allow well pressure to reach the Pressure Gauge
Assembly.

3 Ensure that upper and lower electrical connectors are clean, dry and undamaged.

4.1.2 ELECTRICAL

1 Using a Multimeter, measure the through resistance. The reading should be <0.5Ω.

4.1.3 OPERATING

The QPS010 contains no telemetry other than that of the Quartzdyne electronics. Connection to a
power supply and data acquisition system is required.

Note: Checks can be made without assembling the complete logging system, see Section 7.

1 Raw frequencies may be observed, typical approx values:

Pressure 20kHz
Temperature 55kHz
Ref clock 7.2MHz

2 To check calibrated values, Quartzdyne® calibration files <tool sn>.CRF and

<tool sn>.CRT must be available to the acquisition software. Check that pressure and
temperature read correct values and are not noisy.

NOTE: • WARRIOR and MIDAS acquisition software requires that these files have extensions
renamed to *.CFF and *.CFT.
• Files with extension CRT/F are identified by "R" at the end of the first line; do not alter
this label. If non "R" files are used, i.e. original *.CFF and *.CFT files, the calibration
will be less accurate.

QPS010
Quartz Pressure - Single Sensor Chapter 4. Operating Procedure

3 When converted to pressure and temperature using the calibration algorithm, the
measured frequencies should reflect atmospheric pressure and temperature if the tool is
at surface. Note that the largest errors occur near atmospheric pressure. 30psi are
needed to collapse any small bubbles.

4 Each Quartzdyne reference crystal is nominally 7.2MHz. The actual value through the
temperature range is shown in the Quartzdyne calibration record sheet. These slight
variations will be seen in the Sondex SRO telemetry sync pulse, which is not exactly
1kHz. Using this reference to generate the sync pulse ensures that, by using the Quartz-
dyne calibration coefficients measured with respect to the reference crystal (<tool
sn>.CRF and <tool sn>.CRT), all temperature drifts are taken into account.

4.2 CONNECTING TO TOOLSTRING

Lower and upper tool joint O-rings and seal surfaces should be clean, undamaged and lightly
greased. Remove Transport Screw Plug (item 24) from the well port if present.

1 Remove the memory tool (or XMW) cartridge from the Pressure Housing.

2 Screw in the 3 off Grub Screws, which hold the memory Electronics Cartridge to the QPS
until flush on the outside.

3 Line up the Lemo Plug and Socket and mount the Memory Electronics onto the QPS
Upper Head. Line up the 3 off Grub Screws and screw them out, locking the QPS to the
Memory Electronics.

Note: If the 10MHz internal clock link is fitted in the Memory Section, it must be removed. Slide the
Memory Housing over the Memory Cartridge and connect to QPS Housing.

The tool can be used centered and eccentered. The position of the tool will not influence the
measurement quality of the pressure sensor.

4.3 LOGGING

The following are guidelines only and must be used in conjunction with local policy and specific well
site conditions both downhole and at surface. The table below is appropriate for near vertical wells
and must be adjusted accordingly when in deviated wells. Use of a Head Tension Unit is highly
recommended.

Note: Do not exceed the calculated safe working load of your selected weakpoint. If in doubt, use a head
tension unit, especially in deviated wells where calculation from surface tension is less accurate.

4.4 POST LOGGING DISASSEMBLY

The tool should be cleaned before the toolstring is disassembled. Well port must be flushed
clean, see Section 7.3.2.

Ensure that well fluid does not reach the electrical connectors or the Sensor Assembly.
Disassemble in a horizontal position wherever possible.

Refit thread protectors as soon as possible after disassembling the toolstring to prevent damage to
the O-rings and sealing surfaces.

4.5 TRANSPORTATION, HANDLING & STORAGE

Store with end threads lightly greased and with water tight thread protectors fitted.

Keep the well ports clean and filled with silicone oil. Fit the Transport Screw.

Do not subject the tool to extreme shock, such as dropping or hitting with a hard object.

Quartz Pressure - Single Sensor Chapter 5. Mechanical Description

5 MECHANICAL DESCRIPTION

5.1 DESCRIPTION

See also: Section 3 Theory Of Operation.

The QPS is a quartz pressure Gauge with Gauge protection Bellows. It contains no Sondex
electronics. This tool is designed to be part of the memory tool itself. The Quartzdyne Gauges fitted
are rated as 16,000psi, 177°C Gauges.

The Sensor Section consists of the Quartzdyne® Gauge assembly with the integral Quartzdyne®
Bellows unit. The Bellows unit is screwed into the Lower Sub. The Lower Sub includes a fluid
access port and a port to allow flushing of the lower side of the Bellows.

For technical information on the Quartzdyne® Gauge, see the Quartzdyne® literature on
www.quartzdyne.com.

5.2 DISASSEMBLY

5.2.1 DISASSEMBLY FOR GENERAL MAINTENANCE

Note: The 2 off O-rings (item 18) on the Lower Sub (item 2) and the 2 off O-rings (item 19) in the Pressure
Housing (item 1) can be replaced without disassembly.

Note: Gauge Filter (item 23) is located in the Lower Sub (item 2) and can be accessed by unscrewing
Screw (item 24) and removing the Filter Plug (item 5).

Note: O-ring (item 20) is located in the Lower Sub (item 2) and can be accessed by unscrewing Screw
(item 15).

Note: The QPS housing must not be unscrewed from the Lower Sub until the Memory Electronics has
been removed from the top of the QPS Housing.

1 Unscrew Pressure Housing (item 1) from Lower Sub (item 2).

Note: The O-rings (item 19) can be replaced at this stage by extracting them over the Pressure Gauge
Assembly (item 3, 9, etc.).

DO NOT remove or unscrew any other parts, located on the top side of the
Caution! Quartzdyne® Gauge. This will cause damage to the internal wiring and will render
the tool inoperable.

Note: The procedure described below is only required when O-ring (item 27) and O-ring on the Lower Sub
Connector Assembly (item 6) need replacement. Refer to Section 7.3.1 for replacement frequency.

2 Remove Circlip (item 7) and extract the Lower Sub Connector Assembly (item 6).

Note: This pressure tight assembly is difficult to remove due to friction over the O-ring (item 27). The
source handling tool (p/n 00352), supplied with the Sondex FDR is a suitable extraction tool.
Alternatively a M5 or 10-32 tap can be used. The connector is best tapped out rather than pulled,

which can cause it to suddenly become free and damage the Line Wire. Do not rotate the
Connector Assembly, otherwise the Anti-rotation Pin (item 28) will be damaged.

3 Unsolder the Line Wire (yellow) from the Lower Sub Connector Assembly (item 6).

4 Check O-ring (item 27) and replace if necessary.

Further disassembly for general maintenance is not required.

Note: The sensor buffer O-rings (21, 22 & 17) do not need to be replaced routinely as they are not used
as pressure sealing rings, but as shock mounts.

5.2.2 DISASSEMBLY FOR REPAIR

It is recommended to return the tool to Sondex for repair. However, if a repair is

required immediately, the following procedure should be followed.

Note: The following procedure is only required when the Pressure Gauge (item 9) needs to be repaired.

Ensure that the Quartzdyne housing does not rotate relative to the lower end of the
Caution! Gauge, otherwise the Line Wire, exiting a small hole in the Gauge, will be cut.

1 Perform the disassembly procedure, as described in Section 5.2.1.

2 Unscrew the 4 off Screws (item 16) and remove the Top Half Shell (item 3).

Note: Do not remove the lower Chassis cover if the the top cover has been removed, as this forms an
integral part of the assembly.

3 Unscrew Lemo Retainer (item 11) and carefully pull out the Lemo (item 12), extending the
wires to the end of their slack.

4 Remove the Insert Sleeve (item 13).

5 Unsolder the Wires from the Lemo (item 12).

Note: There are five coloured wires from the Gauge and a yellow Line Wire from the Lower Sub
Connector passing directly to the Lemo Connector on the Upper Bulkhead.

6 Remove the 2 off Screws (item 16) to remove the Upper Bulkhead (item 4).

7 Remove the Lower Chassis cover from the Lower Bulkhead by unscrewing remaining
Screws (item 16).

8 Carefully pull the yellow Line Wire out of the top of the Lower Bulkhead (item 2; side of the
Pressure Gauge (item 9)).

9 Unscrew the Pressure Gauge (item 9) from the Lower Sub (item 2).

Caution! This will expose the Gauge Bellows, which must be protected from being knocked.

Wiring Diagram WD-80623

5.3.1 REASSEMBLY AFTER REPAIR

Note: The O-rings (item 19) can be replaced on the Lower Sub (item 2) at this stage, if it was not done
previously. Ensure the O-rings are greased, using Silicone Grease.

1 Inspect all parts for cleanliness and damage. Replace damaged parts if necessary.

Note: Ensure the location, into which the Gauge Bellows are fitted, is clean.

2 When the Line Wire needs to be replaced and a Wire is still threaded through the
Quartzdyne Gauge, it is usually possible to pull a new Wire through without opening the
Gauge.

If the Gauge is separated from the Bellows, the Bellows position setting will be lost
Caution! and the calibration will be invalid. In the field, recovery from this situation is difficult.

3 Fit a new Sealing Cone (p/n 92118, not shown) between the Gauge (item 9) and Lower
Sub (item 2).

4 Screw the Pressure Gauge (item 9) onto the Lower Sub (item 2), using a torque of
approx. 47Nm. There should be a gap of approximately 1mm between the Bellows Hous-
ing and the Lower Sub (item 2). They must not touch.

Caution! Ensure the Gauge Bellows are protected from being knocked.

Do not use a spanner on the Gauge, as this may change the Bellows setting and
Caution! can make the calibration void.

Note: Take care the Line Wire is not being trapped between Lower Sub (item 2) and Pressure Gauge
(item 9).

7 EXTENDED CHECKS

7.1 PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

7.1.1 GREASE & LUBRICANTS

Sondex recommends the use of “Liquid O-ring type 101” (p/n LOR101) on threads and O-rings, see
APPENDIX A.

All O-rings and housing threads are assumed to be and must be lightly greased unless specifically
indicated differently.

Correct use of grease and lubricants is essential to the maintenance of all Sondex downhole
equipment.

Note that some threads are internal such that grease can get inside the tool. Do not use excessive
quantities.

Sondex does not recommend Copper loaded greases since some types can cause electrical leaks.
Some types are also not suitable for use on O-rings. Silicone grease may be used on O-rings, but
must be kept clear of threads especially stainless to stainless.

The use of certain greases, such as some types of Lubriplate, can cause electrical
Warning! failure if they have any volatile content, which can burn off producing corrosive
gasses inside the tool.

7.1.2 MECHANICAL

1 Remove dirt and old grease from pressure housing threads and O-rings and replace with
fresh.

2 Inspect O-rings for damage or ageing/hardening and replace where required.

3 Check for:

• Damaged wires.
• Wires that are loose and likely to be crushed on re-assembly.
• Damaged components.
• Loose screws/nuts/components/connectors.

Note: If RTV or similar compound is used to secure loose components, it must be fully cured before
housing is replaced.

• Electrical components shorting to Chassis.

• Heat or chemical damage (discoloured components).
• Incorrect thread grease or excessive quantity, see Section 7.1.1.
• Cleanliness of connectors and loose/bent pins before replacing.

4 Check all fixings for tightness.

5 Flushing and well ports should be kept clean and oil filled. Check Filter.

QPS010
Quartz Pressure - Single Sensor Chapter 7. Extended Checks

7.1.3 ELECTRICAL

1 Check through line resistance and tool current, see Section 4.1.2.

2 Perform a visual inspection of the top electronics for debris, damaged components and
wires.

7.1.4 AGEING OF ELECTRONICS

At 150°C, significant electronic ageing failures are expected after 4000hrs typical use, hence PCB
replacement should be considered at this point. Every additional 10°C halves the time. Also accel-
erated by vibration and corrosive gas inside the Chassis. Visual inspection and logging previous
history is recommended, but is unlikely to predict premature failure.

Tools that may be suspected of reliability problems due to age or unusual log response may be
heated to 120°C, which would not normally age the electronics, and then subjected to moderate
vibration. A moderately hard blow from a wooden hammer is recommended. DO NOT USE
METAL HAMMERS.

7.1.5 HEAT TESTING ABOVE 150°C

This is not generally recommended since it shortens tool life expectancy.

Heat testing may be required for contractual reasons, tool out of use for a long period or job with
unusually high well temperature. The test should be carried out only slightly above expected well
temperature and the tool should not be kept at temperature for more than 1 hour.

7.1.6 PRESSURE CALIBRATION CHECK

Note that Quartzdyne Gauge calibrations usually remain accurate for 3 years or more, depending
on use, see Section 7.2 Pressure Calibration. Customer contracts may require full calibrations more
frequently, possibly every 12 months.

Gauge calibration can be checked by comparing 2 or more Gauges for agreement. The Gauges
MUST be at a constant, uniform temperature.

Note: See Section 1.4 for well port thread specification.

The Calibration may also be checked at 2 or more points.

A very severe test is to subject the Gauge to a high pressure/low temperature regime (e.g.
10000psi/20ºC).

This is way off its normal measuring range, so if it the reading is acceptable here, then the Gauge is
very unlikely to be out elsewhere.

Applying high pressure to the well port only, may cause the Flushing port O-ring to
Warning! fail (especially at high temperature). This should therefore be covered to prevent
injury from a jet of hot oil or O-ring fragment.

Heating the Gauge at 14psi is a less effective check. Note that the accuracy spec below 100psi is
quoted as very poor (in practice it is not too bad) due to the Bellows, so a bad reading here does not
necessarily indicate a bad Gauge.

QPS010
Quartz Pressure - Single Sensor Chapter 7. Extended Checks

Note that any reference pressure reading is only as accurate as the test equipment, second Gauge
or dead weight tester.

Quartzdyne's Compute.exe program, which converts frequency readings to pressure and

temperature, may be useful for testing without logging system.

7.2 PRESSURE CALIBRATION

This must only be performed by qualified personnel with sufficiently accurate temperature and dead
weight pressure equipment. Such equipment is usually only to be found at specialist test houses or
large oilfield service companies.

Sondex does not supply this equipment.

Quartzdyne's Curvefit.exe program generates cal files from a .DAT file. Format should be as
described in Curvefit.txt and not as the .DAT file supplied with the Gauge.

The Gauge is normally removed from the QPS tool for calibration, hence must be pressure tested
for leaks when re-fitted.

Note that the Flushing port O-ring may fail at high temperature and pressure, hence should be
covered for safety.

7.3 EXTRAORDINARY MAINTENANCE

Ref.: General Assembly Drawing 05017

See also Section 4.1 Pre-Logging Checks.

7.3.1 O-RING EXCHANGE

Note: Sondex recommends replacement of all O-rings when the tool is disassembled for repair.

It is recommended to replace the following O-rings every run:

• 4x item 19.
• 2x item 18.
• 1x item 20.

The following O-rings require replacement after 5 runs or 3 months, whichever comes first:

• 1x item 27.
• 1x O-ring on the Lower Connector (item 6).

Note: O-rings (item 21 & 22) do not require servicing. Sondex recommends to service them when the tool
is repaired.

If the tool experiences H2S gas or temperatures above 150°C, the following O-rings must be
replaced:

• 4x item 19.
• 2x item 18.
• 1x item 20.
• 1x item 27.
• 1x O-ring on the Lower Connector (item 6).

7.3.2 FLUSHING

The tool should be flushed after every job.

Note: Remove the Gauge Filter and Retaining Screw, if fitted (item 23 & 5).

1 Flush the Sensor Port by unscrewing the Pressure Isolation Plug (item 15) at the back of
the Lower Sub, and pumping water/clean oil through.

2 Check condition of O-ring (item 20) and replace if necessary.

3 Check condition of Filter (item 23) and replace if necessary.

4 Reinstall Retaining Screw, Filter and Plug (items 5, 23 & 15).

5 Trap the clean oil (or water) in the Bellows chamber with Screw (item 24).
