Objective 1

Define the term input devices

Students will be shown the diagram below, student will use the diagram to formulate a
definition for the term. Students will share their definitions aloud and in the chat.

A formal definition for Input devices will be shared with the students, students and teacher
will identify similarities between their definitions and the one shared by the teacher.
What are Input devices?
An input device is any hardware device that sends data to a computer, allowing
you to interact with and control it.

Objective 2

Classifications of input devices.

Students will be told that input devices are categorized into three (3) categories. Students
will be instructed to unscramble to words below to figure out the three categories:
Inotpgni vcdiee – Pointing device
Nncgans evidce – Scanning device
Eyk cvdeie – key device
After unscrambling the words, students will be asked to name 2 examples of each category.
Categories of Input Description
devices
Pointing device A device with which you can control the movement of the
pointer to select items on a display screen. Examples of
pointing devices include mice, trackballs, joysticks,
touchpads, and light pens.
Scanning devices An electronic device which scans artwork and illustrations
and converts the images to digital form for manipulation,
and incorporation into printed publications. For example;
bar-code readers

Each student will choose or be assigned an input device from the list below to research and
present information on:
 Keyboard
 Mouse
 Joy Stick
 Light pen
 Track Ball
 Scanner
 Graphic Tablet
 Microphone
 Magnetic Ink Card Reader(MICR)
 Optical Character Reader(OCR)
 Bar Code Reader
 Optical Mark Reader(OMR)
 Touchscreen
 Touchpad
 Digital pen
 Web cam
Students will research and present the information below on the chosen device:
Definition of the device

________ places on special forms (e.g. National Lottery
Tickets, answer sheet for multiple choice exam
paper).
Used when data needs to be ________ quickly.

Magnetic Ink Character Uses a magnetic ink character reader to input
Recognoition or ________. characters printed in special magnetic ink. Banks
use MICR to process ________. It is very secure.
Numbers at the bottom of the cheque are printed
like this. Equipment is very ___________.
______________ ____________ ___________ Uses an ordinary scanner and special ________ to
or OCR convert text so that it can be edited by word _________
software. Poorly formed characters will not be
recognized. Also used on payment slips for credit
card payments.
Bar Code Reader A set of lines of different ________ to represent a
number. Data is input using a bar code ______. Used
as a code number on products in shops – not to
store prices but can look on the store’s computer
system to find out price. Manufacturer, etc.
___________ also use barcodes.
Magnetic Stripe Reader Thin band of magnetic _________ found on back of
credit or debit cards. Used on _______ cards and
electronic key cards (hotels). Holds small amount of
information and can easily be forged. Soon will be
replaced with “smart cards” – much more data
stored on a small _____ on the surface of the card.
Sensors To detect physical quantities outside the computer.
E.g _______. Light, pressure, etc. to process the data
an _________ -to-digital converter must be connected
between the computer and the sensor.
