Topic: The promotion of culture through nostalgia

Recent research has indicated that nostalgia informs the occurrences of the past, the

present and the future. Stitching time is the most common aspect of nostalgia. Research

conducted by Sarial-Abi et.al (2017) revealed that there is possible ramification of vintage

consumption. The research was based on previous studies which indicated that vintage

consumptions offer mental connections between the past, the present and the future. The

outstanding impact of vintage consumptions on people shows that the culture can be promoted

through nostalgia.

The connection between nostalgia and culture has not been investigated in many studies.

Most of the studies have looked into the politics behind nostalgia. For example, a study

conducted by Kenny (2017) revealed that nostalgia in contemporary ideological discourse

informs an attitude towards the populist future. This is because nostalgia is depicted as an

indication of flawed political argument or allegiance. Other studies have informed the

consumption attitudes in relation to nostalgia. For example, a study conducted by Baena et al.

(2015) revealed that there are different dialects of nostalgia. This was revealed by investigations

carried out on the novel Downtown Abbey and how it connects to the English identity. The

researchers in this case investigated the ideological use of nostalgia for this contemporary

performance in relation to identity and ‘Englishness’. This showed that there is a close

connection between nostalgia and consumption. In this case the item under consumption is

‘entertainment media’.

Culture is a vast topic that upholds the social behaviors and norms that are based in the

society. It also allows the expression of knowledge through art and various cultural practices.

Through culture, factors such as language and religion are passed down in the society through

consideration of the past, the present and the future. Culture is therefore connected to nostalgia.

Investigating culture through nostalgia is therefore an effective study because only a few studies

have been conducted in relation to the subject.

One example of the few scholars that have focused on that subject is Scheimer (2014) in a

research study that he conducts and that investigates the issue of the late-modern hipsters and the

tendencies that exist in popular culture. The researchers observed that the modern aspect of

hipster connects the different relations among generations. The hipster also shows the connection

between technology and media.

There is a connection between the culture and nostalgia and research has not looked into

these aspects. The knowledge deficit will therefore be addressed through addressing the

following research question; how is culture promoted through nostalgia? The connection of these

factors will be carried out through a detailed review of related literature that connects the

variables. The literature review will investigate the dialects of nostalgia and cultural factors.
