Learning objectives
• Students should be able to write opinions (sentence-level)
• Students should be able to respond to written questions by saying their opinion
Two types of answer
In the previous lesson, you’ve learned to separate opinions from facts when reading
someone’s written answer. Now you are going to learn how to formulate sentences to
answer someone’s question.
In your answer, you must be clear which information is a fact and which is an opinion. To
do this, you need to know how to write factual sentences and how to write sentences
that contain your opinion.
How to make the differences clear:
When you state your opinion, you can:
- Use modalities” should, have to, must, may
- Begin your sentences with ‘I think…’, ‘In my opinion…’, or ‘The way I see it…’
- Use tentative language: ‘maybe, possibly, perhaps’
Example:

Question: Should I use my weekends to catch up with my lessons?

Answer:
• I think you shouldn’t do that. Weekends are for family time or for taking a rest.
• You may do that if you think you really need some extra studying
• Maybe half-and-half? You can use Saturday for studying and Sunday for resting
• If you work/study from Monday to Friday, then I think it’s better to rest on
weekends
Summary
When writing your opinion:
1. Be clear!
2. Use modalities: can, should, may, might, could
3. Use tentative expressions ‘maybe, possible, perhaps’
4. Use expressions ‘I think…’, ‘In my opinion…’, ‘The way I see
it…’
Instruction: Answer the question
below by mixing facts and opinions.

fact, and which one is an opinion.

Question: Why do college students

Practice 1 want to graduate fast?

In my opinion, why students want to graduate quickly, most

facts on the ground show that students want to graduate quickly
because they want to reduce the burden of tuition fees

Question: Should you study abroad

Practice 2 even if your English is not good?

In my opinion, studying abroad is not a necessity unless you have

the potential to be able to study abroad, for example, if you are not
qualified, you can take various tests and try to take part in
scholarships. the facts in the field show that most people who study
abroad are people who have more potential than ordinary people,
they study harder than ordinary people so that they can study
abroad

I personally think yes, because our lectures must

be independent and different from high school, in
college we must be able to manage time properly
