MATHEMATICS 10 – QUARTER 1 - WEEK 1

Prepared by: MRS. ROXAN CREDO DAYAO

LESSON 1

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE: DEFINITION, COMMON DIFFERENCE,

NTH TERM, ARITHMETIC MEANS AND SUM

CONCEPT:
A sequence is a function whose domain is the finite set {1, 2, 3, …, n} or the
infinite set {1, 2, 3, …}.
n 1 2 3 4 5
Example:
a(n) 3 -1 1.5 10 π

This finite sequence has 5 terms. We may use the notation a1, a2, a3, …, an to denote a(1),
a(2), a(3), …, a(n), respectively.
In Grade 10, we often encounter sequences that form a pattern such as that found in the
sequence below.
n 1 2 3 4 …
Example:
an 4 7 10 13 …

The above sequence is an infinite sequence where an = 3n + 1.

CONCEPT:
Arithmetic Sequence
- sequence where the difference between any two consecutive terms is
constant and this constant is called the common difference
- Every term after the first is obtained by adding the common difference(d)

A. How well do you know me?

then give the common difference(d) if it’s an arithmetic sequence.
1. 3, 7, 11, 15, 19
2. 4, 16, 64, 256
3. 48, 24, 12, 6, 3,…
4. 1, ½, 0, -½
5. 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36
6. -2, 4, -8, 16, …
7. 1, 0, -1, -2, -3
8. ½, 1/3, ¼, 1/5, …
9. 3x, x, x/3, x/9, …

1. 3, 12, 21, ___, ___, ___ 6. 17, 14, ___, ___, 5
2. 8, 3, -2, ___, ___ 7. 4, ___, ___, 19, 24, …
3. 5, 12, ___, 26, ___ 8. ___, ___, ___, 8, 12, 16
4. 2, ___, 20, 29, ___ 9. -1, ___, ___, ___, 31, 39
5. ___, 4, 10, 16, ___ 10, ___, ___, ___, -11, -17

Worksheet No. 3(Arithmetic Sequence: Finding the nth Term and the Common Difference using
an Equation)

CONCEPT:
A. Finding the nth term
If a1 and d are known, it is easy to find any term in an arithmetic sequence by
using the rule

an = a1 + (n – 1) d,

where, n = refers to the position of the missing term.

Example: What is the 10th term of the arithmetic sequence 5, 12, 19, 26, …?
Solution: an = a1 + (n – 1) d
a10 = 5 + (10 – 1)7
a10 = 5 + (9)7
a10 = 5 + 63
a10 = 68

B. Finding the Common Difference(d)

Example: What is the common difference of the arithmetic sequence with
a1 = 5 and a4 = 26?
Solution: an = a1 + (n – 1) d
a4 = a1 + (4 – 1)d
26 = 5 + (3)d
26 - 5 = 3d
21 = 3d
21 = 3d
3 3
7 = d or d = 7

A. Find it!
Use the nth term of an arithmetic sequence an = a1 + (n – 1)d to answer the following questions.
1. Find the 25th term of the arithmetic sequence 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, …
Solution:
2. The second term of an arithmetic sequence is 24 and the fifth term is 3. Find the first term and
the common difference.
Solution:

3. Give the arithmetic sequence of 5 terms if the first term is 8 and the last term is 100.
Solution:

4. Find the 9th term of the arithmetic sequence with a1 = 10 and d = -½.
Solution:

5. Find a1 and d if a8 = 54 and a9 = 60.

Solution:

Worksheet No. 4(Arithmetic Means)

A. What can you insert?

Insert the indicated number of arithmetic means between the given first and the last terms of an
arithmetic sequence.

1. 2 and 32 [1]
2. 6 and 54 [3]
3. 68 and 3 [4]
4. 10 and 40 [5]
5. ½ and 2 [2]

CONCEPT:
Arithmetic Means – terms m1, m2, …, mk between two numbers
a and b such that a1, m1, m2, …, mk, b is an arithmetic sequence.

Example: Find the 2 arithmetic means of 7 and 22.

Solution: 7, ____, _____, 22.

It is clear that the missing arithmetic means are a2 and a3.

Step 1. Find d.
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
a4 = a1 + (4 – 1)d
22 = 7 + (4 – 1)d
22 = 7 + 3d
22 - 7 = 3d
15 = 3d
d=5

Step 2. Find a2 and a3.

a2 = a1 + d a3 = a2 + d
a2 = 7 + 5 a3 = 12 + 5
a2 = 12 a3 = 17

Conclusion: Therefore, the two arithmetic means between 1 and 22 are 12 and 17.

B. Solve it!
Solve the following problems.
1. The arithmetic mean between two terms in an arithmetic sequence is 39. If one of these terms
is 32, find the other term.
Solution:

2. If five arithmetic means are inserted between -9 and 9, what is the third mean?
Solution:

3. What are the first and the last terms of an arithmetic sequence when its arithmetic means are
35, 15, and -5?
Solution:

Worksheet No. 5(Finding the Sum)

CONCEPT:
To find the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence is obtained by

n
Sn = [2a1 + (n – 1)d] .
2

Example: Find the sum of the first 10 terms of the arithmetic sequence 5, 9, 13, 17, … .
Solution:
n
Sn = [2a1 + (n – 1)d]
2
10
S10 = [2(5) + (10 – 1)4]
2

S10 = 5 [10 + (9)4]

S10 = 5 [10 + 36]

S10 = 5 [46]

S10 = 230
