Interesting Question: When is Germany's birthday?

The first direct predecessor state, the North German Confederation, was founded the 16th April
1867.

The German Empire proper was proclaimed the 18th January 1871. But this was never
celebrated as an official holiday.

The current form of government, the Federal Republic of Germany, was founded the 23rd May
1949, when the constitution came into law. But this isn't a holiday either, and it's generally not a
well-known date, which is also the joke in the comic.

The national holiday is the 3rd October (1990), when Germany was reunified. But this date only
marks the disappearance of the DDR and not the emergence of something new, so it hardly
counts as a birthday.

Also noteworthy, November 9 is also quite an important day in German history. Being the day
which:

The Revolutions of 1848 failed.

Kaiser Wilhelm II is dethroned, beginning the Weimar Republic.

The Nazis tried to seize power in Munich, with the Beer Hall Putsch.

Kristallnacht.

And the Berlin Wall fell.

August 843 : Treaty Of Verdun, when Carolingian Empire splits in 3 countries called Francia
Occidentalis (aka France), Francia Orientalis, (who will change its name to become Holy Roman
Empire aka "First Reich"), and the third brother between them, dead at early age.

Another answer can be the foundation of Teutonic State (1230?), which will then become
"Duchy of Prussia", vassal under the rule of kingdom of Poland (Poland can into relevant),
which will become an independent kingdom in 1701, and ancestor of the 2nd Reich after 1870
war. Prussians are still ruling Germany today since the capital city is berlin.

The Duchy of Prussia came under the rule of Brandenburg in 1618, which subsequently led to
the formation of Brandenburg-Prussia and then the Kingdom of Prussia. Going by this, we can
start with the Margraviate of Brandenburg which came into existence in 1157.

Bonus fun fact: the traditional colours of the German football team, black and white, come from
the Prussian flag.

Awesome! Not so long ago I was at the Niederwald memorial which has the lyrics of the Wacht
am Rhein carved into the pedestal. Really impressive monument.

I also heard some time ago that "Deutschland über alles" does not imply that Germany should
rule the world. The song was first sung 1841. That was a time where Germans were denied
their own national state and had to live in little kingdoms. That phrase should mean that
Germany as a nation should stand above all this little-state/kingdom bullshit.
German neonazis -brain-lacking as they are- do not know history and therefore do not
understand this.

Since I see this topic come up quite frequently, I'm gonna copypasta a previous comment of
mine regarding the question of original/intended meaning and interpretation of the
"Deutschlandlied":

The meaning was willingly perverted to what we generally associate it with as early as 1890 and
continuing on throughout the First World War.

The first time it was played in an official capacity was when we took over Helgoland which
basically was a colonial land swap intended to further Germany's influence in Central Europe by
building a massive fort and naval base there. The first line in particular took on a meaning of
German (imperial) power and superiority after that.

During the early months of WWI the so called "Myth of Langemarck" originated and became one
of the most important propagandistic occurences of the following two decades. It was widely
reported that whole regiments of young, enthusiastic soldiers bravely rushed the French lines
while singing "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" and finally overpowered them.

It is obvious what this story projects. And it's also obvious that nothing of the original meaning of
the phrase remained. "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles - especially above France and all
our enemies" was the sole meaning at that point.

When Germany lost WWI a fourth verse was composed in 1921 which became an unofficial part
of the now official national anthem for German nationalists and actually ended up being printed
in song books for the German Kriegsmarine.

What were the first lines of that 4th verse?

"Deutschland, Deutschland über alles | Und im Unglück nun erst recht"

engl.: "Germany, Germany above all | In misfortune more than ever"

This is another pretty good indicator of what people before and during the First World War
associated with "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles". The meaning here obviously is that one
should not despair because Germany will rise again to glory through hardship. German
superiority, it told the listener, didn't evaporate just because the war was lost.

In this sense the whole song was perverted into something completely different and so it's
completely understandable why there were fervent objections to make the third verse the
national anthem again. Even if that verse itself doesn't have the phrase "Deutschland,
Deutschland über alles" in it or the geographic descriptions alluding to a country that clearly is
not what Germany is today - it's still a part of the same song.

Up until reunification most people didn't even sing it and at many official festivities only the
melody was played.
So to summarise my argument: it's not really important what the original meaning of the phrase
was considering that during the times the song actually became intrinsically important to
Germany and Germans it had taken on a completely different meaning.

Therefore it's nothing more than an interesting piece of information but not inherently important
to define what the phrase means for Germany as it exists. In a more recent comparison you
could say that it was similarly unimportant for East Germans what the original meaning of Bruce
Springsteen's song "Born in the USA" was when 200,000 people chanted the titular phrase into
the night sky above East Berlin in 1989. Most of them didn't understand the verses and had no
idea it was about the sorrows of a Vietnam veteran. What it meant to them was "Freiheit -
Freedom" and an abject rejection of manifest socialism.

That's the crux with many pieces of art: the original or intended meaning is oftentimes only of
secondary importance in a specific context.

This comic was drawn by a Polish user (who wants to remain anonymous) based on a script I
posted over half and a year ago in /r/Polandballarena. It took two and a half months from the
first sketch to the final version, so you better appreciate it!

Germans love model trains and model making in general. Related details are the German
station clock, Germany's Deutsche Bahn (German Railway) cap and the figures of striking
railway workers.

Panel 3

On the coat rack, there is a very oktoberfest Bavarian Trachtenjanker jacket and a typical
Anglea Merkel pantsuit. Germany has a Mercedes-Benz key.

Panel 8

There's a traditional Black Forest cuckoo clock.The erotic photo of France refers to the "Draw
me like one of your French girls" scene from Titanic. (NSFW) The fridge magnets are a
reference to this comic. They are: a "Maß of beer" bottle opener, a 1 Deutsche Mark coin,
Reichtangle, the Iron Cross and the EU flag.The beer recipe refers to the Reinheitsgebot
(German Beer Purity Law). The postcards are from places of German colonialism: New Swabia,
Antarctica (penguins, the proximity of the Reichtangle hints to the conspiracy theories
surrounding this place); Lüderitz, Namibia (diamond mine); Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New
Guinea (cannibalistic PNG, with Pickelhaube) and of course Mallorca, Spain (a hole dug into the
beach). On the counter, there are Sauerkraut cans.

There are unexploded weapons in the rubble (four bombs, one Soviet F1 and one American Mk
2 grenade). In the background, there are the Brandenburg Gate and the Kaiser Wilhelm
Memorial Church. Schleswig-Holstein is a Trümmerfrau (after this photo). Hamburg is
traumatized because of the extreme bombing during the war. Lower Saxony has a turnip
because of the Hunger Winter 1946/47 which was also called Turnip Winter. He is bartering with
Bavaria who has cigarettes, a black market currency. Hesse was given a piece of chocolate by
America. France is keeping the Saar protectorate captive. Württemberg-Baden is stealing coal
(a practice that, for personal needs, was officially sanctioned by the Cardinal of Cologne).
Rhineland-Palatinate is sending parts of a dismantled factory to the victorious power. The
dismantling of German industry ("Demontagen") as reparation was a common practice after the
war. Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern are warily eyeing each other since they (together
with Württemberg-Baden) were later fused to the modern German state of Baden-Württemberg.
Poland, having lost her eastern territories, is being fed with parts of dead Prussia.

Panel 19

The painting is a Polandball rendition of Anton von Werner's Proclamation of the German
Empire. (See panel 25 for the contents of the cupboard)

Panel 20

On the Western side, there are an F-15 (plane), an M26 Pershing (tank) and a VW Beetle (car).
On the Eastern side, there is a MiG-15 (plane), a T-62 (tank) and a Trabant (car).

The car is a BMW F30 from the 3 series.

Panel 23

The photos on the ground that also exist in real life are the Berlaymont building of the European
Commission and of course this iconic image of the bombing of Dresden. The rest is fictional.

The pictures on the cupboard show the Holy Roman Empire and the 1951 founding ceremony of
the European Coal and Steel Community, the earliest predecessor of the EU. On the bookshelf,
there are: Goethe's Faust, the Luther Bible, the Basic Law (English for "Grundgesetz", the
German constitution), Marx's Das Kapital, Grimm Uncensored, von Clausewitz's Vom Kriege
(On War), Grass's The Tin Drum and Kein Mampf (a wordplay that roughly translates to "No
munch").

House number 49 is a reference to +49, Germany's international calling code (and

coincidentally also to 1949, the founding year of the Federal Republic). Poland has +48, so she
is Germany's neighbor. Poland has a EU-funded telescope. She was out stargazing because
she cannot go into space.
