EYC Revised Safety Policy Adopted April, 2011
A. The skipper of an EYC-owned boat shall have sole responsibility for the safety of
the boat and passengers, and for the safe use and operation of the boat. The
skipper shall require everyone on board an EYC-owned boat to wear a properly-
fitting and fastened Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (including on
EYC-owned powerboats, sailboats, kayaks, and sailboards).
C. It is the skipper’s responsibility to check the condition of all boat parts, lines, sails
and halyards before leaving the pier.
E. The staff will maintain a daily written list of members who are on the water in
EYC-owned boats, except for boats used in racing or lessons. The list will
include the date, the skipper’s name, the number of persons on board, the boat
used, the departure time, and the expected return time.
F. Skippers are expected to return EYC-owned boats daily before the EYC’s closing
time.
G. EYC-owned powerboats are only for the operational use of EYC staff or qualified
EYC member volunteers during EYC events, with permission of the Director or
an EYC officer. EYC-owned powerboats are never to be used recreationally.
EYC staff are prohibited from taking EYC members as passengers on EYC
powerboats except as necessary to teach lessons or to run races.
H. The EYC staff is not responsible for the safety of, or for monitoring or tracking,
members using boats not owned by the EYC.
I. No alcohol or illegal drugs are allowed on board EYC-owned boats at any time,
nor may EYC-owned boats carry anyone under the influence of alcohol or illegal
drugs.

A. Lasers, Flying Juniors, and Optimists.
1. During EYC lessons and EYC series races and regattas, any EYC member
can skipper a Laser, Flying Junior, or Optimist.
B. Flying Scots. An EYC Skipper's License is required for any person skippering an
EYC-owned Flying Scot at any time, except students in EYC lessons.
1. Pass the EYC Skipper’s test administered as part of the EYC’s lesson
program.
3. If over age 18, provide a written sailing resumé acceptable to the staff.
III. EQUIPMENT
A. The EYC will ensure adequate ladders and at least one throwable PFD are present
at the outer end of the pier.
A. All students enrolled in lessons are required to have emergency care information
on file.
C. Juniors traveling by car for any EYC-sponsored junior event are required to wear
seat belts.
V. OTHER SAFETY ISSUES. Members who recognize a safety issue should contact the
EYC staff, the EYC Commodore or other officer, or a member of the EYC Safety
Committee.
