To compensate for this horrendous neglect of our history, we need to identify and rectify the imbalances in historical scholarship, to apply the best techniques, use the best perspectives not only of the discipline of history but also those of ister disciplines in the social sciences and ‘humanities as well as access the voluminous historical data in ar~ chives and libraries in many parts of the world. In ‘passing, theauthor ferred to prehispanic socal structure as tribal, ‘ting Juan Plasenca’s 1889 "Customs ofthe Tagalogs” as evidence. “in Father Plasenca’s own words,” he wrote, "This tribal gathering is called in Tagalo a barangay." 1m actual fact, however, these were not Father Plasencia’s own words; they were the words of Harvard historian Frederick W. ‘Morrison sho provided this translation for Volume 7 of the ‘monumental Blair & Robertson compendium, The Philippine 1s. ands, 1493-1898. Whether a Tagalog barangay was a tribal gather {ng or not, Father Plasencia didnot eay so. What he said was: "These [datas] were chiefs of but few people, a8 many as a hundred house land even les than thirty; and this they callin Tagalog, barangay: ‘The word "uibal” was, therefore, supplied by an American Nistory professor in 1903, not an eye-witness in 1589, and so reflcts 2 20¢h- Eentury preconception of what I6th-century Philippine society was like, And the incident itself reflects @ problem facing any Filipino student searching for his own pas: his textbooks were all wit in English by authors who used English translations as their sources. ‘Ofcourse, any translator mighteasily eympathize withProfessor Morrison’ ovn protlem. When transating Plasencia’s four classes of Tagalog society, for example, what was Morrison todo with words like principales, hidalgos, pecheras and esciayos? Prinipales were clearly datus those the Spaniards rst called kings until they discovered they had neither kingdoms nor power over other datus, and the esclavos were lipin, slaves. But Plasencia also distinguished a sert-like category of slaves who ovned their own houses asa separate class he called Pecheros tibute-payers, And between these and the datus, he recog hized the datw’s non-slave subjects, maharika as hidalgos, gentry 2 Looking for the Prehispanic Filipino lor well-to-do, which Morrison in his turn translated as "nobles" Like bidalgos, these maharika accompanied thelr lord to war armed at {heir own expence, but unlike them, they Towed his boat alongside slave oarsmen, harvested his rice like Field hands, and provided ‘manual labor when he called fori "ts tue that hidalgos were technically a lower grade of nobility, but the translation "nobles" is misleading; in both English and Spanish, nobles are titled lords~like the Count of Monte Cristo or {he Duke of Windsor. The ently dictionaries define maharlika unambiguously as freomen, libres, oF freedmen, libertge—e.g., “St ikapat ang. ‘kamaharlikaan kom one-quarter free® Freedmen were former slaves, and when they were freed they became, not nobles, but the ‘lass ancestors ofthe Filipino peasantry. After the conquest of lowland Luzon, however, complaints about attack by tunconguered highlanders became a regular refrain. By the 17th century this unwillingness 40 submit was being explained as an innate character Maw. Rodrigo de Aganduru Mésis's 1623 Mstorls ‘genera is typical. "These primitive black people,” he said, “are no more Filipinos than the American Indian 1s representative of the United States citizen? Evidently General Romulo’s preconception also moved fim to ignore the fact that thoce United States citizens belonged toa different race from the Indians thelr forebears had dispossessed, and the Igorots did not. Perhaps that is why he called ther ‘Meanwhile, between Riza’s and Romulo’ time, the preconcep tion developed into a wave migration theory. The dea that Negros ‘were aboriginal Filipinos driven into the hile by Tater migrants called indioe was as old as the introduction ofthe terms ‘Then in the Bismarck era, Rizal's good friend, Ferdinand Blumen- tut extended the Negrito analogy to the rest of the population ll Filipinos im the interior were driven there by Filipinas on the coaet. ‘Thus he divided them into two waves of Malay invaders, and then added a third to account forthe Moros. Local variations in culture and physical type he explained as the result of intermarriage, ‘theextentof intermarriage to resistance and conquest, buthe appears not to have considered any movements within the archipelago asdue to ecological reasons or normal population growth. The theory was ‘based, not on observed facts, but on a Darwinign preconception of ‘racial compotition for survival. Thus the terrace-builders and gold- miners of the northern Luzon Cordillera were considered in some ‘sense inferior to thelr lowland neighbor In 1905, a young American school teacher was stationed in Ifugao who was to become the author of a wave migration theory known to every literate Filipino today—H. Otley Beyer. After an ‘extensive examination of living Philippine cultures and types, he ‘added two waves between Blumentit’s Negritos and Malays Indonesian Types A and Band assigned cach one a date to produce an imaginary chronology of migratory invasions for the official ‘Census of 1918. Then in 1921, he became the Father of Philippine ‘Archaeology with the discovery of Stone Age sites in Novaliches, ‘and during another quarter century of excavations, assigned every bbone or artifact recovered to one of his theoretical migrations. The most obvious is that It fs, after all, simply a theory, speculative rather than factual, a pothesis to be tested. "A more serious problem is thatthe theory ignores the fact that cultures change.
