Introductory Message
This Self Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
-

continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each
lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by- step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module, or if you need
to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post test to self check
- -

your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also
provided to the facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how
they can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests.
Read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.
What I Need to Know

Hello! How are you today? Again, welcome to the amazing world of science.
Are you ready to our new lesson? I have a question. Have you eaten spaghetti,
macaroni salad, ice cream and cake? These are some of the foods that we prepare
during birthday celebrations. Have you eaten all these foods? These are the result of
mixing/combining different ingredients or materials. In our daily lives, we mix different
materials for a certain purpose. Materials can be solid, liquid or gas.
We are now on week 5. The lessons were divided into three:
Describe the changes in properties of materials when mixed with other
materials. (S4MT-1g-h-6)
Lesson 3.1 Describe what happens to the solid material when mixed with other
solid materials.
Lesson 3.2 Describe what happens to the solid materials when mixed with the
liquid materials.
Lesson 3.3 Describe what happens to the liquid materials when mixed with other
liquid materials

Lesson Changes in Properties of Solid
Materials when Mixed with other Solid
3.1 Materials

At home, we are using different materials for our daily use. We also mix
different materials for cooking our food, for washing our clothes, for the farm and
many other uses. Even when playing, you also are used to mix different materials.
This mixing or combining of materials may result in some changes.

What’s In

In your previous lesson you have learned about changes in the properties of
the materials when exposed to different temperatures. Let us try how you remember
your past lessons well.
Directions: Arrange the scrambled letters to form the correct word being described.
DIQULI 1. When the ice is heated, it becomes a __________.
INEARRGAM 2._________ is an example of material that changed its form from
solid to liquid when heated.
DOOLEC 3. Some materials changed back to its form from solid to liquid when
________.
DILOS _4. When water is put inside the refrigerator, it will change to _______.
HTEAED _5. An ice becomes water when _________.

What’s New
This time, we are going to perform different activities about mixture. This is all
about the changes in the properties of the materials when mixed with other materials.
Before we proceed to the different activities, let us know first the meaning of mixture.
When two or more materials are mixed/ combined, a mixture is formed.

Activity 1: What happens to the solid materials when mixed with other solid
materials?”

3
Objectives:
1. Describe what happens to the solid material when mixed with other
solid materials.
2. Identify the changes in the properties of solid materials when mixed
with other solid materials.

3. Classify solid materials based on their characteristics and properties.

What you need:

1 pc. Spoon

2 pcs. Mixing bowl/ any small plastic

pairs of container.

1 tablespoon sand and Mongo seeds

1 tablespoon Pepper and rock salt

1 tablespoon Monosodium Glutamate (

vetsin) and Iodized salt

1 tablespoon flour and baby powder

1 tablespoon Papaya seeds and Mongo

seeds

1 tablespoon powder milk and flour

4
What to Do:
1. Using a spoon, mix each pair of materials listed in the table in a mixing bowl,
one pair at a time.

2. Observe each mixed materials by looking and touching the resulting mixture.

Record your observations on the table below by checking the proper column.

Objectives
1. Define what is liquid.
2. Describe what happens to the solid materials when mixed with the liquid
materials.
3. Describe the changes in the properties of solid materials when mixed with the
liquid materials.

Before we proceed to our activity, we must learn first the meaning of the word

listed in the table.
3. Observe carefully what happens to each mixture.
4. Record your observations on the table by checking the proper column.
5. Write down also the changes you observed when solid and liquid are
mixed or combined.

Activity 3: “What happens to the liquid materials when mixed with other
liquid materials?”
Reminders:
• Careful in doing
the activity.

materials;

2. Describe the changes in the properties of liquid materials when mixed with
other liquid materials.

Materials Needed:

1 piece teaspoon
5 pieces clear drinking glass/plastic cups
2 teaspoonfuls cooking oil and water
2 teaspoonfuls alcohol and water
2 teaspoonfuls alcohol and vinegar
2 teaspoonfuls soy sauce and cooking oil
2 teaspoonfuls alcohol and cooking oil

Guide Questions:
1. Based on the result of the activity, what pair of liquid materials mixed
completely? Why do you think this happen?

_____________________________________________________

2. Which pair of liquid materials did not mix completely? Why do you think this
happen?

_____________________________________________________

3. What can you say about the changes when two liquid materials are mixed?

_____________________________________________________

4. How did you find the answer to the different questions given?

What is It

⚫ Remember
We used tothese:
mix/ combine solid with other solid materials which forms a
mixture.
⚫ The mixture of solids, wherein we can still identify each material is called
heterogeneous mixture.
⚫ The mixture of solids that looks the same all throughout is called
homogeneous mixture.
⚫ The properties of each solid material in the mixture do not change. The
size, shape, color of each solid material remains the same even after mixing.
10
⚫ Solid materials can be mixed / combined with liquid materials. Some solid
materials completely dissolved in the liquid, but others do not.
⚫ Some solid materials settled at the bottom of the container, while others
stayed within the liquid.

What I Have Learned

“Now I know….”
Now that you’ve learned a lot from the very start of our module, let’s
summarize our lesson from the very start by fillingg the blank with the appropriate
word or phrase that correctly fits in each of the sentences about mixtures.
Directions: Fill in the blanks with the best answer that will make each sentence
correct. Choose your answer from the box below.

Heterogeneous mixture mixture

Homogeneous mixture dissolve liquid materials

There are many materials around us. It can be solid or a ______. Each can be
mixed with other material. Mixing two or more materials is called ________. Some
solid materials are ________and completely mixed with the liquid material. When the
solid material is mixed with solid material, each of the combined materials can be
easily identified from one another. Such mixture is called_____________. Some
solid materials when mixed with other solids cannot be distinguished from each
other. The resulting mixture looked the same throughout, and the mixture is
called_________________________.
