One morning, Oliver got permission to go out
to work. There had been no handkerchiefs to work
upon for two or three days and the dinners had
been rather small. 1 Oliver set off with his two
companions: the Dodger with his hat on one side
as usual and Master Bates with his hands in his
pockets.
Oliver wondered where they were going and what
kind of job they would be training him to do. 2
In fact, they seemed to lack any sense of purpose:
the Dodger kept pulling the caps from the heads of
small boys and throwing them on the ground while
Charley Bates took apples and onions from the stalls
and stuffed them in his enormous pockets. It looked
very bad! Oliver was starting to think of excuses
he could make to escape them when suddenly the
Dodger became very still and put his finger to his
lips.
‘What’s the matter?’ asked Oliver.
‘You see that old gentleman over there by the
book shop?’ said the Dodger. ‘He’ll do.’
The old gentleman looked very respectable. He
was wearing white trousers and gold glasses, and he
was carrying a smart walking cane. He was standing
looking at a book. 3 Oliver was unsure what
to do as the two boys walked slowly towards the
gentleman. He just stood there silently and watched
in horror as the Dodger’s hand slipped into the old
man’s pocket and pulled out a handkerchief. He
handed it to Charley Bates and both of them ran
round the corner at full speed.
All at once, the mystery of the handkerchiefs and
the watches and the jewels became clear to Oliver.
This was the job they were training him to do! He
stood, for a moment, in terror. 4 At that moment,
the gentleman put his hand in his pocket and found
his handkerchief was missing. He turned round
quickly and caught sight of Oliver disappearing into
the distance and naturally concluded that he had
taken it. ‘Stop, thief!’ he shouted as he ran after him.
The old gentleman was not the only one to shout
this. The Dodger and Master Bates were hidden
in a doorway not wanting to draw attention to
themselves. When they heard the cry, they joined
in, shouting ‘Stop, thief!’ and running alongside the
old gentleman like good citizens. 5 Some joined
in the chase, shouting excitedly as Oliver started to
slow down with tiredness. Finally, he was stopped
by a blow to the mouth. He lay on the pavement
covered in mud and dust.

According to a recent study, perfectionism may be an

such as difficulty moving around and having to be dependent on
others, she is extremely generous with her time and resourceful
in exploring ways to help others. She is an excellent example of
a person who devotes her life to others, thus being an inspiration
